Funny thing about Brian's tread about being dissapointed in Andromeda Strain...I was thinking along similar lines before even reading it. Some movies should never be redone. I go with, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Plus, if it is based on the book, and does the book even less justice, why bother? Do you have any favorites which you hope never get remakes? Two that come immediatly to mind are Gone With the Wind and Wizard of Oz. I can just see them going nuts with FX and not much else. I mean, if you consider both were made in 1939, I think they are great as they are. And who could replace Judy Garland as Dorothy?

Gone with the wind did have a made for TV sequel called "Scarlett". With Joanne Whalley Kilmer as Scarlett O'Hara and Timothy Dalton as Rhett Butler. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108915/ And the Wizard of Oz currently has a "re-imagining" being broadcast on the Sci-fi channel called "Tin Man". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0910812/ I've never seen it but I've heard it is a more adult orientated version of the original book. There are quite a few films I can think of that should never been remade but already have been, The remakes of Planet of the apes Remakes are nearly always 100% pointless and awful, I am trying to think of one that was actually worthwhile.................................................

The Fog. The first one was bad enough.

I think anything that was good the first time should be left alone. If they want to remake an old bad movie and turn it into something worth watching...more power to them.

I kind of see your point about The Andromeda Strain, Marie. I certainly wish they hadn't made this particular remake. But the idea of remaking The Andromeda Strain in general, I think could've been a good idea. The original movie was very good, but it's > 30 years old at this point, and as a movie about science and technology, it's showing its age. I think that if they'd remade the movie by just replacing the characters and the technology, and keeping the story the same, it would've worked out. The problem was that they butchered the story. In terms of remakes in general, that's the real issue: I think updating a good movie is one thing. Changing it is another. If you're remaking a good movie, don't change the story. And for God's sake, if it's not a good movie to begin with, don't bother!

Good point. There are loads of films that I think are brilliant that "critics" or the "general consensus" think are crap. E.g - I like Waterworld.......and Dune..............and Crow 2-City of angels.......and Plan 9 from outer space.

I mean, the movie certainly couldn't hold a candle to the book, but that's really to be expected, with a book of that scope. They couldn't possibly fit everything in. I think they didn't do as well expressing the internal monologues of the book as they could have, but other than that, I thought the movie was quite good.

Plan 9 From Outer Space is a totally different category..the so bad they are good movies. In a campy sort of way. Ed Wood could not nhave gotten away with it now, but then...

I have a DVD of a special TV edition of Dune that has a 20 minute prologue explaining some of the history of the Dune universe and the different houses/races/factions etc. The film itself is also half an hour longer and fills in some of the gaps in the narrative that are evident in the original cut. David Lynch who has distanced himself ever since finishing work on the film had his name removed from this version so the director is one alan smithee (the default name for any project the director refuses to associate with). I for one love the costumes and the production design of Dune and it has a real sense of otherworldyness and strangeness that makes it interesting and different from usual space opera fodder.

what was the point of the remake of Hitchcock's "Psycho" that came out like 7-8 years ago? it was reshot, scene for scene, shot for shot, word for word. what the hell was the point of that??
