As sickening as this is to admit....I like The Karate Kid.  And The Karate Kid II.  I know, I know....I feel like I am back in middle school slobbering over the teen idols of the day, like Matt Dillon or C. Thomas Howell or Emilio Estevez or....does anyone else remember River Phoenix?  Besides, Ralph Macchio reminds me of my son so I'm not entirely unbiased.

So what movies from our younger days do you love, that you hate to admit you love?  Like The Breakfast Club!!!  That one ROCKS.

Real Genius - by far the BEST eighties movie out there. "Would you classify that as a design flaw or a launch problem?" "We only had one entry for the Madam Curie lookalike contest and he was disqualified!" "You have to get even with Kent. It's a moral imperative."

Short Circuit = "Number Five is alive!"
Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2

Back to the Future - all three. Ok, ok, the third one was made in 1990 but that's technically the last year of the 80s.

Blade Runner

Clue

Princess Bride - just saw it again tonight; far too many quotes to list here.

Coming to America "I was in the family business...Goat herder!"

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Desperately Seeking Susan

Revenge of the Nerds

Dreamscape

A Fish Called Wanda

Spaceballs "I'm a mog - half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend!"

Field of Dreams

Innerspace

Jumping Jack Flash - "I'm a little black woman in a big silver box!!"

Lethal Weapon "I'm getting too old for this sh!t"

Die Hard "I'm sorry, sir, this channel is reserved for emergencies." "No shit, lady, do I sound like I'm ordering a pizza??"

Clue

This Is Spinal Tap

Top Gun

Oh, and the second-best eighties movie: WarGames "Good morning, Professor Falken. Would you like to play a game?"

Ok, I'll admit I had to look some of these up to be sure they were made in the 80s. But they're all terrific.

I didn't realize there were so many from the 80's that I liked and would/do see again...

"Amerika" (1987)
Back to the Future (1985)*
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
Cocoon (1985)
The Four Seasons (1981)
Ghost Busters (1984)
Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
The Karate Kid (1984)
Lethal Weapon (1987)
The Lost Boys (1987)
Moonstruck (1987)
Mr. Mom (1983)
Overboard (1987)
The Princess Bride (1987)
Roxanne (1987)
Scrooged (1988)
Silkwood (1983)
The Star Trek movies
Stripes (1981)
The Terminator (1984)

*Where there is a series I only listed the first one.

I'm sure there are more, but I haven't completed my list at IMDB - my attempt to stop some of the hemorrhaging of a mind like a sieve.

The Karate kid is a great 80's film, thanks to the fashion, the haircuts and the soundtrack. Its basically Rocky with a kid.........who does Karate, who couldn't see the appeal of the poor new kid in town overcoming the bullies at the Kobra Kai gym ?

When the Brat Pack thing started I was a young teenager and was very much into all the angst and navel gazing and cheesy romance that was prevelant in most of those films. Writer and director John Hughes could do no wrong in the 80's, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen candles, Weird Science etc were all great for their time.

The greatest films of the 80's were......in my opinion.......

The Empire strikes back - 1981 - (The best Star Wars film)

The Shining - 1980

Das Boot - 1981

Aliens - 1986

The Elephant man - 1980

Full Metal jacket - 1987

Bladerunner - 1982

Stand by me - 1986

The thing - 1982

Scarface - 1983

The Terminator - 1984

Glory - 1989

The Killing fields - 1984

The Untouchables - 1987

This is spinal tap - 1984

E.T - 1982

The Blues Brothers - 1981

The Last Emperor - 1987

There are a lot of obscure personal favourites, but I think the list above is pretty strong.
