I read the book, and I'm also looking forward to seeing the movie. "Thin Red Line" was a huge disappointment, so I hope it will be something worthy to be called the "Saving Private Ryan of the Pacific."

I saw trailers for both "Flags of our Fathers" (the American view of Iwo Jima) and "Letters from Iwo Jima (the Japanese view).
Unless an American director and producer had supported the project, I doubt a Japanese studio would have done a film on Iwo Jima. "Letters from Iwo Jima" will be released Dec. 19 in Japan and in the States (on a limited release) some time in February.
I look forward to seeing both of them, and I hope they release "Letters" on DVD with region 1 encoding in the States so I can watch it on my DVD player.

I read the book a few years ago and saw the movie last week. Of course the book is better than the movie but I believe it is still worth everyone's time to see the film. The only problem I had with the film was the shuffling of the storyline told in flashbacks. Some may find this confusing, but as my brother suggested, this was probably done to keep from becoming a boring film. After the original battle scenes the movie slowed way down to depict what happened to the survivors after returning to the U.S. Without the flashbacks to keep one interested the film would put people to sleep.
