You might recall I have mentioned he is a musical chap.  Plays violin, particulary Irish folk music well, considering he hardly ever picks up his instrument.  We often play together.

He has always been the quiet kid, happy to read comics every break at school, by himself.  He made 3 or 4 good friends just before we left England, and it was sad to wrench him from them.  Though they stay in contact.

Anyway, I have been telling him for years, that once he plays with other musicians, he will never look back, and his violin, though mocked at school, will open doors for him later.

I heard a few days ago about a small bar in town, that has jamming sessions every Sunday night, and decided that I would go, and ask Zak to come with me.  He did.  We stayed there until 2am last night, and where made very welcome, although neither of us took any of our instruments.  (He, incidentally is a brilliant singer too).

Well, for a kid that has never had any particular aim in life, and rarely gets enthusiastic about anything, it was a joy to see him so comfortable chatting to the other musicians, who have convinced him to bring his violin next week.  He is looking forward to it immensely, and even asked me to come along again and get some photos for our website of him playing with the others.  (This lad normally HATES being photographed!)

So, there you go, my baby is finding his feet, and I can let go of his hand now and watch him follow his path with pride.  Baby!....  He's 16 and twice my size!:D

It must be pretty exciting for him to find a niche in life, especially that young.  I always wished I had a talent like that. *sigh*

Please keep us posted, I'd like to hear more about this.

That is a really sweet and bittersweet story, Pussycat.  What a mom you must be! My wife had a bit of time dealing with it when our son left the nest, but the reward of seeing them turn into decent, real human beings is more than worth it.:amen:

The evening did have a humorous spot.

I was sat outside talking to the guy who runs the jamming session and had left Zak comfortably sat inside chatting to the others.  I was explaining to him, that Zak was initially very shy, but would come around and is a great person.   Mid one of my sentences, the guy stopped me, and said, 'Hang on, did you just say it was your SON?.  I grinned proudly, and said "Yes, he's a great a kid".   The fella then laughed uncontrollably for a minute, much to my embarrassment, as I was wondering what on earth could have caused him to think this was so funny.

He realised I was getting concerned, and said..."That's rich,  I can't wait to tell Dennis over there, (pointing to the bar),  as he figured Zak was your boyfriend".

I have to give that one 10/10 for sheer Nerve! :D

It was Sunday night again last night, and the night he had been asked to take his violin to the Jamming session.

The place was packed, and I could see the terror in his eyes as we got there.  I just winked at him, and told him not to worry, that he'd be fine.  He didn't look convinced.

We sat quietly at the bar enjoying listening to the other musicians, when one of the crowd happened to spot his violin case, which he had wedged between his legs and the bar to keep it hidden.  And THAT was that!

The folk there were very sweet, and encouraged him not to worry that he made a few slips and had become very frustrated.  The rhythym guitarist kicked in and played accompanying chords for him to keep his momentum, and suddenly he was on cloud nine.

Cheers and whistling filled the bar when he had played 3 songs, and he managed a weak smile, but I knew inside, he was turbulent with euphoria.

Later on during the evening, he did a couple of solo vocals (he has a brilliant voice), and again the crowd was in raptures.

After that, and more requests for him to fiddle again, I knew he was away.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any pics of him playing, as I was holding his music for him, although he didn't really need it, but he just needed a buffer.

When at 2am, I leaned over and whispered to him, that it was late and that we should go, he was clearly reluctant, but we tried to make a quiet exit.  That was not to be, as we were spotted leaving, and the room became manic with folk coming up to him so congratulate him, and say goodnight.

All the way home, he was chatting about how he was going to practise, 'The Devil's in the house of the rising sun' for next week, now that he knew the others would join in and that he wouldn't have to play the whole thing alone.  And a whole host of other stuff that had been played during the evening, that he had not known.

He had learnt a lot from the other musicians, who seemed very happy to have him in their brigade.

I insisted that next time, he take his scooter, so that he can stay as late as he likes next time.  He can't wait!

I am so proud of him! :)
