PBS rocks!  I adore FRONTLINE and NOVA, and I sometimes catch ANTIQUES ROADSHOW.

Of course, I am disappointed that Elmo dominates Sesame Street, that attention hog!  I miss Super Grover!

tonight, may 20, 9 PM eastern on most PBS stations, is a program about Mrs Beeton. she's well-known to our Brit friends as the martha stewart of her day, victorian England. her books can still be found and many still refer to them for household tips, like how to treat the servants! :D i just read an excellent bio of her recently, she died tragically at age 28.

I watch PBS occasionally. Watched it back in the sixties when it was NET (National Educational Television), too. I saw a play with Cyril Ritchard and Cornelia Otis Skinner "The Irregular Verb, To Love" that was truly fabulous. And there was a dramatization of Lizzie Borden that had me cheering her on when she was going upstairs with the hatchet.

More recently there was a modern dance version of Romeo and Juliet I wish was on DVD. And best of all was Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night". I have had a crush on Felicity Kendal (who played Viola) ever since.

Nope, no dancing. It was a straight dramatic presentation. Mrs. Borden was insufferably arrogant and rude. At the end she smart-mouthed Lizzie again and went upstairs. Lizzie grabbed a hatchet which was used as a wall decoration and ran up the stairs screaming with rage. By this time I HATED Mrs. Borden and I was yelling "Go, Lizzie, go!"

I wish PBS would show it again so you could see it, but that doesn't seem likely.

that's a version i've never heard of, interesting! i researched lizzie thoroughly for many years, been in the house, read all the books and trial transcripts...even interviewed elderly nursing home residents in fall river who had memories of her....but that's an entire other thread, don't want to get me started! :D...in point of fact, despite all the fictional accounts over the years, it was lizzie who was resentful and rude. she could never abide abbey as her stepmother.

It was only a dramatization, and it was on TV forty-odd years ago. Perhaps more research has been done since then. That play may not have been intended to be completely accurate.

Oh, yes, I do! Go for it! But just to summarize, in your opinion, was she innocent or guilty? Another question: Which book is the most accurate?

oh she did it alright! .....i wish i could recall all the book titles, i cannot. but i fell in love with criminology because of lizzie when  at age 18  i stumbled across the borden graves. an obsession with homicide was born! lizzie knew her father had money and she really wanted to live in a fine house up on 'the hill'. after she was acquited (it was the o.j. case of the time, international news) she bought a big place on the prestigous hill and named it maplecroft. she was often seen traveling about in a fancy carriage, but shunned by the fall river society who supported her during the trial. she also shoplifted in fancy stores, and one merchant forced her to sign a 'confession' in exchange for not prosecuting her. her sister lived with her for a while, but finally left her and moved to NH, never spoke to her again.

Cool.

Are you saying this was her motive?

i would hesitate to ascribe any one single motive to lizzie, but there should be lots of information and sources and photos online. i used to haunt the historical society and courthouse until i finally discovered the wonders of google!.........i do NOT think it was a sudden crime of passion, she killed abbey and then had to wait quite a while for her father to come home. also, she attempted to buy poison, prussic acid, in days leading up to murders.

tonight, may 23, at 8PM eastern....Voyage of the Courtesans---Recalling the 1790 voyage of British female convicts who were sent to an Australian penal colony. The women transformed the vessel into a brothel and offered their services to men at ports along the way. The documentary is based on a book by Sian Rees.

The venerable series "Masterpiece Theatre" changes its name but not its quality, delivering a solid adaptation of Jane Austen's "Persuasion," about 27-year-old Anne Elliot (Sally Hawkins) facing spinsterhood.

tonight, Jan. 13. --9 PM eastern, on most PBS stations, begins a dramatization of all Jane Austen's classics! i'm salivating! (that would be dramatiSation for Ninja!) :D
