Harvey Mandel is a smoking inventive, creative guitarist.

He invented fingertapping, though Stanley Jordan and Eddie Van Halen have been given

credit for that technique.  I shared some time in the studio with him many years ago, and was acquainted with him in the 1970's, cause my brother was the road manager for two of his bands, Canned Heat and Pure Food and Drug Act.  He also held down guitar duties in the Rolling Stones for awhile.

My brother gave me 5 cd's of his which were privately released, and I am blown away with his guitar playing.  One is called The Emerald Triangle, and one of the others is called Planetary Warrior.  Amazing stuff if you can find them.  I know he has a website

and currently lives in Nor Cal.

Who is the most underrated guitarist?

Dr. STeve

Jimi Hendrix.

Sure, he's highly rated, but yet extremely under-rated.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

Steve Vai is over rated, but I'd say David Gilmore is under rated, just because people always say "Eddie Van Halen" whenever this question comes up.

It's ME!   I think I'm great, but then so does Dave Lister from The UK TV Series 'Red Dwarf'.  Watch Red Dwarf before you post! :P

Actually, you'd love 'Red Dwarf'  it's one of the best programmes ever produced in the UK.  Go watch them now!

And if you don't love them,  YOU'RE far too serious!  CHILL and breathe deeply for a year or two!  :)

That would be me---

because I can't play guitar worth CHIT!!!!

the rhythm just screws with me!

I can play a good mandolin, some fiddle, banjo was where I started---

And I'm classically trained as a pipe organist/choirmaster...

But somehow 'strumming' a guitar and handling the chords just ISN"T my thing---

I suppose. however, that doesn't make me under-rated--

More likely over-rated by anyone (non musical) who's ever complimented me by accident or because they were smoking crack when they heard me play....

Armed with the power of Thy name nothing can ever hurt me, and with Thy love in my heart all the world's afflictions can in no wise alarm me.

Far and away the most underrated guitarist is Jeff Beck.  David Gilmour is a close second.
