A number of my friends roll their eyes when they hear about opera because they think it is either inaccessible or boring.

Last week I bought a video of one of my favorite comic operas, and I am convinced it is one of the easiest for newbies. My suggestion to those willing to dip their toe in the sea of opera is to listen to "The Bartered Bride" by Smetana. Here are my reasons:

1) The music is catchy and entertaining. Comic operas are good for this. Some serious operas contain beautiful melodies, but they can be so drawn out as to be soporific. If you fall asleep, you probably won't want to listen to it any more.

2). The story is funny. Wagner's operas are usually overly dramatic and complex, so unless one is really into German folklore one will probably be turned off by them. Russian operas are generally dramatic, also, though they generally have some comic relief. Smetana used a story that is funny in itself and neither overly complex nor too predictable.

3) There is a chorus in it that sings the praises of beer. No further explanation is needed.

Those of you who watched Road Runner cartoons as kids will know much of the music.

I dare you-- take the opera plunge!

Opera is tedious like Shakespeare. I think that`s partly why people are turned off by it.

Also, the performing arts are not the main form of entertainment anymore. But, until the turn of the 20th Century, was like TV or film is now. People are conditoned away from it or push away from it.

Those are a couple of obvious reasons for the decline of the apprieciation of Opera.

I generally don`t listen to and know very little about Opera but, I`ll certianly keep your recommendation in mind!

I Love a good "rock opera".............but classical music is the wave of the past & the future. Here is a cool kinda diddy..........and yes I do like opera,if not for the words, but for the tones. Although story telling is great, if not understood .......anyway.This was some Austrailian guy.
