`Dreamgirls' shut out for best-picture
The musical "Dreamgirls" led Academy Awards contenders today with eight nominations, but was shut out in the best picture category. The ensemble drama "Babel" was close behind with seven. Other best-picture nominees were the crime saga "The Departed," the World War II spectacle "Letters From Iwo Jima," the road-trip comedy "Little Miss Sunshine" and the monarchy-in-crisis chronicle "The Queen."

Actaully, I'm interested in seeing, "The Departed."  Isn't that a remake of an old 50s movie?  I always liked film noir.  I'm also interested in "Letters from Iwo Jima."   That's the flip side movie of "Flags of our Fathers" showing what it was like to be ordered to suicidally defend Iwo Jima by the Japanese Empire.  I'll also check out "The Queen" just because I love a good period piece with all the costumes and stuff.

I'll pass on "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Babel."  Those strike me as movies that the critics love, but when you watch them you just kind of go "eh."

It was very unique and off-beat, funny too. Great acting! It was about this dysfunctional family that tries to get the young daughter in a big beauty contest. This is one of those movies that is hard to describe because it is nothing like you would expect. It's very funny and touching at the same time, I was very surprised. I highly recommend it. You will be able to see why it was nominated right away.

I have not been to a movie in a long time. I would like to see The Departed, but will wait for the DVD to come out. Probably won't rent it buy more likely. I like all the actors in it so it should be good. anything with Jack is good

the departed is out on DVD, i watched it tonight. any comparisons to goodfellas are bogus. it was convoluted, and yet almost a bore. i like the genre normally, but this was far from the best.

The Queen was one of the best movies I've seen in recent years, LC !!!  I nearly missed it because of the subject matter (being a bolshie republican aussie who doesn't like foreign royalty who officially rule my country at the other side of the world).  But Helen Mirren was in it, so I went anyway, and was bowled over. Don't miss it!!!
