the departed is out on DVD, i watched it tonight. any comparisons to goodfellas are bogus. it was convoluted, and yet almost a bore. i like the genre normally, but this was far from the best.

I saw The Departed on video earlier this week. I liked it more than you did. I thought it was a workman-like effort, but I think Martin Scorsese has made several better movies. I agree that Goodfellas is one of them. I also thought his Taxi Driver and After Hours were better films.

I wasn't even all that impressed with the performances in The Departed. I did think it was the best performance I've seen from Leonardo DiCaprio, but I'm not a fan. Mark Wahlberg was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, but I think he's done better work than this in other films.

It also won academy awards for editing and adapted screenplay. I don't object to either of those. I admit I didn't see many films from 2006, but the editing and writing in this film were not bad. The film was adapted from a Hong Kong movie which I haven't seen.

I suppose I should warn sensitive viewers that the F-word is used 237 times in this 151-minute movie! (It tested even my limits of tolerance.) And there are other objectionable words in the movie besides. The violence is extensive but not extreme (as gangster movies go these days). The sex scene is minimal but hot (no nudity). So its R rating is appropriate.

If you like gangster movies or if you're a Scorsese fan, its a must-see. Otherwise, well, maybe.
