I agree that Jesus lays out those things as you said later in chapter 24 but the initial inquiry by the disciples was as presented to Him unless you disagree? Let's stay verse by verse for proper context. Your turn on verse 4 when your ready. :D

Are you ready to continue or would you like to review the question posed to Jesus in Matthew 24:3 further?

Jesus said, "Take heed that no one deceives you."

Given a basic difference in understanding of 'context', perhaps you should go ahead where you wish to go?

3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"
4Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you.
*************************************************

Ok, here in verse 4 Jesus responded to their question first with a stern warning:
"Watch out that no one deceives you."

Jesus is immediately warning them that there will be people who will try to "deceive" them about His coming.

Yes, He does, why should He not?

But it is not a statement that every Prophet is a deceiver, in fact if that were the case why set parameters for when the TRUE Prophet will appear?

Please relax Scott. Your showing a defensive posture. Can we agree in verse 4 that Jesus is warning them that there will be those who will try to deceive them about His coming?

Of course, and I can name some obvious candidates for "failed" prophets. Mani is a good example.

Ok, moving forward Jesus continues in verse 5 saying...

5For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many.

Christ = "anointed"

1) Christ was the Messiah, the Son of God

2) anointed

Fair enough? Ready to move on?

Okay, define "Son of God" what do you exactly mean, because Christ does mean "Annointed" and it does not mean "Son of God". "Messiah" is Hebrew and it means "Annointed". It does NOT mean "Son of God".

"The Son of God" in Greek transliterates as "ho huios tou theou", not "Cristos".

Oh, it's fair enough. . . . but the phrase does not appear in these verses of Matthew 24, does it?

So let's leave that discussion for another time an place--perhaps a thread on the nuances of Messiah, Christ, Son of Man and Son of God.

You want to stick to this a verse at a time, right? So let's not bring in language that is not there in the verse.

Scott

That's fine. So Jesus is warning that some will come saying they are the Messiah...the Anointed One.

Ready to move onto verse 6?

Ready to move onto verse 6?

"You may fire when ready, Gridley!" ~ George Dewey, Captain commanding the Asiatic Squadron, Battle of Manila Bay, 1898. Gridley was the gunnery officer for the flagship Olympia.

6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.

This falls under the things that are leading up to His coming. The earlier signs to look for...

Actually, He is saying don't waste your time considering those things. They are always around.
