What do you think of the idea of uniting the entire world? That may or may not involve such things as gradually breaking down national borders, establishing a common world language, etc.

Should we keep the status quo, the way we have run our international affairs for the past one or two hundred years, or discard it for a different philosophy?

Would unity ultimately be beneficial or harmful for us?

I'm not asking "is it possible", I'm asking if it is a good and worthwhile concept.

Okay.  I guess that's a fair question. :)

I don't see world unity as a good thing.  The bigger the geographic area you're dealing with, the more differences there are going to be -- in culture, environmental and economic needs.  The United States avoided a civil war for all of 80 years.  For a world government, I'd give it about 8 days.  You could have a world government, but it would resemble the later stages of the Roman Empire, on a larger scale.  Any society that would be born out of such a configuration would scarcely be recognizable to us.  And it would, of necessity, be a very violent place.

You don't think we, all the people of the world, could get together and find solutions - if we tried hard enough?
Any society that would be born out of such a configuration would scarcely be recognizable to us.
True, but would that be such a bad thing? After all, two hundred years ago the major form of government was absolute monarchies. We don't have a lot of those any more, but we get along fine with elected democracies.
it would, of necessity, be a very violent place.
Why? (World peace is my other idea for a thread.)

There is no getting a forum with 487 members in it to agree on everything, or even most things.  And you think it's a possibility with the entire world?  What fantasy land do you live in?

The 487 of us don't have to agree. We aren't pointing weapons at each other. We don't need each other's cooperation on this forum for food and raw materials.

I not only think it's a possibility, I think it's a necessity.

I'd sooner watch a glass of water evaporate.  Don't try and cram that religion down my throat, I get enough of it seeing that damn never-ending thread with you battling the Christians.

In a word, no.  Some things aren't matters of opinion, and there's no compromising on them.  If I need a gallon of water a day, and you need a gallon of water a day, and we've only got one gallon of water, then what?

If I live in an area with lots of agricultural needs, and you live in an industrialized area (and by "area", you can think of something the size of your average European country) we're going to have very different ideas about the kinds of laws we should have.  (And that's before you throw all the different cultures into the mix.)  The best you could hope for under such a system would either look like the U.S. under the Articles of Confederation or the Confederacy during the Civil War, neither of which worked out too well.

Any society that would be born out of such a configuration would scarcely be recognizable to us.

Being unrecognizable in and of itself wouldn't be a bad thing.  The problem is that such a society would be recognizable to the Romans of ~ 400 AD.

Why? (World peace is my other idea for a thread.

Picture what the world would look like if the U.N. exercised real power, and passed laws instead of resolutions.  To do that, you'd need an enormous military.  And you'd need to get that military from the former nations.  These former nations have, in some cases, thousands of years of history.  What you'd end up with is essentially a barbarian army like the Romans had toward the end.  (And that's not a good thing...)

I have not read one post in that thread, but since I use the "recent posts" button I see the thing every 5 minutes.  It amuses me to a point, because the visual I get is a room full of people all screaming, "NO, I'M RIGHT!" and bouncing their face off a brick.  If it is good for anything, it's good for a laugh.

Okay. But isn't it possible we have more than one gallon of water? How do we know we haven't got enough resources for everyone to not only survive, be be somewhat comfortable?

Okay. But in a united world isn't it possible that the military personnel would see themselves as members of the world force, not as ultimately loyal to a particulat PART of that world?

Granted, we haven't achieved that so far. But couldn't we?
