The Old Testament instructed and sanctioned people to kill kids - including their own - for all sorts of reasons that seem absurd today.

The Quran instructs followers to kill the (infidels) -those who do not believe that Allah is the only God and Muhammud his prophet. Does Jesus teach to kill kids Frank? Does Jesus say to kill your enemy or to love your enemies? When are you going to quote the Son of God intead of the Jewish Mosaic written laws and customs that pre-date Christ's 1st coming?

I was referring to the Old Testament - where the 10 Commandments came from.  In there, God instructs people to kill infidels and kids for all sorts of reasons obscene by today's standards.  Was the source material of the 10 Commandments too irrelevant or something for me to use here?

The bible has a beginning-middle-and end. God gave us Genesis all the way to the final Revelation of Jesus Christ. Constantly quoting Old Testament verses that are Jewish in heritage and show the terribly harsh, violent and often odd history of those times is your choice. I prefer instead of the Law as given by Moses to Israel the law of love and grace as given by the Messiah. It's revelant, but a small segment of history and timeline.

It seemed highly appropriate to mention it in context of Fox's comment. .

And I must say you do well in your bible research. Keep up the good work and time in your bible. It will produce good in time for you.

Jesus said, "Take heed that no one deceives you."

Thank you.  But like Fox said, "If some religion told me to jump off a bridge, I doubt I'd stick with that religion very long....................  It has to feel right, you know?"

I simply stated that at one point, there was a religion that effectively told us to do extreme things like that.  Using scripture to justify having sex with your daughter (the topic here) is in the same basic boat as using scripture to justify killing her, I felt.

Someone show me in the Bible where it says for pastors, fathers, or Christians to rape their daughters and I'll believe this man is a Christian or a "Bible literalist" or "fundamentalist Christian".

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

Whether or not it actually states that in the bible is irrelevant. As a Christian pastor he "interpreted" the scripture as defending and justifying his vile actions. It is this "interpretation" of scripture used to justify whatever heinous crime or action that is so dangerous.

He is definately a serving christian pastor, he is definately a fundamentallist christian, and his church are definately still behind him despite his actions.

Sorry Jester but fundamentalist Christians (like every other section of society) are sometimes guilty of disgusting, deplorable acts.

You're good at deductive logic. That man isn't Christian. If you took some time to study the scriptures, you'd know that.

Hi, 1jeseter.

I think the problem that people are alluding to is that the Bible is a book.  It's a piece of literature; a collection of stories.  Whether or not the stories in it are true is almost beside the point.  The fact is, when you have a piece of literature, and people who are able to read it (and I use the word "read" here separately from the word "understand"), the literature will be interpreted all different kinds of ways.  That includes people reading "between the lines", as it were.  And I would argue that the sanction of incest by God (at least at some point) is something you can imply from the text.

It's pretty simple:  You start off with two people:  Adam and Eve.  Adam and Eve have children.  At some point, Adam and Eve die.  So you're left with just brothers and sisters.  At that point, incest had tocome into play.

Then, of course, you've got the story of Noah and his daughters.  Definitely incest there, and another matter of necessity, as I read it (even if they did have to get him drunk first).

One coudl argue that if God didn't condone incest, He would have created Adam, Eve, Mary and John, and then in Noah's time, saved more than one family.  (Even at that point, it gets complicated, though.)

I'm not saying Christianity condones incest.  If you ask any Christian with any familiarity with Christian orthodoxy, they'd tell you incest is a sin, and an abomination.  But one of those "We're no longer under the Law" types could easily rationalize incest from several parts of the text.

And when a whacko watches a movie and thinks it tells him to kill and he does it... what's the point? If everyone is looking for the standard of perfection in humans, give it up. Religious or not. If you want perfection...look too Jesus.
