I am inclined to think that the Adam and Eve story is not written by God and we all didn't start with one couple like that ... and that this is one more reason to think so. This just inspired me to create another thread about something ... standby.

The Bible is a collection of canonical texts of the True Chruch of Christ based on decisions made during the early ecumenical councils. Being canonical does not make it literal anything. It is the task of the Church to interpret the Bible. The rantings and ravings of biblical literalists are often nothing more than proclaimations of irregular, schismatic, or heretical groups that call themselves "Christian". These groups have no validity and are not part of the Church of Christ - this is a historical fact. Most of these groups are derivatives of the schismatic Roman Church.![]()

Hear that, Frank? You're an irregular, schismatic, invalid heretic. Go bash yourself with a branch on your back, bad boy.

foxglovepress wrote: Brian wrote:foxglovepress wrote: My preferred answer is that God didn't plan such a thing. I don't think a God that is active in human affairs is compatible with the world we see around us. I think it's an illusion created by the human brain's (somewhat overactive) ability to see patterns. Consider this: If a major disaster happens, and hundreds or thousands of people die, some portion of the survivors always attribute their survival to God's protection. But I think you've got to ask yourself, where was the protection for everyone else? What made Person A worth saving and Person B not? Now, naturally, there's an answer to this: Chance. Some people survive disasters simply because they're standing in the right place at the right time (e.g., the firefighters who survived the WTC collapse inside the stairwell). Other people make conscious decisions to save themselves that others, for whatever reason, don't make. And sometimes, well....Sometimes we just don't know. A lot of people are unsettled by that. I find it somewhat comforting, though. If that's true, a person's actions have meaning and purpose. If it's not true, then we all live in an ant farm, at the mercy of a psychopath with a blazing sun at his back, holding a magnifying glass, capriciously focusing the beam. I would hasten to add that I don't believe that God exists, so this isn't what I actually think of Him. I'm willing to agree to the possibility that a First Cause God (i.e., Deist conception of God) might exist, but such a God does not intervene in the lives of humans. I suppose if He exists at all, he works a little bit like a contractor (although hopefully more reliably): He builds one universe after another, looks at it, says, "It'll do", and goes off to build the next one. I don't see any evidence for such a God, but I also don't see any way to negate the possibility of such a God's existence.
