Agreed, hell is so clearly a creation of man to try and scare and intimidate the cowering masses into following the man made rules of certain religions.

Fundamentallist christians used to try and scare us with the threat of hell, as the average man became more intelligent they now try and scare us with tales of the day of judgement is upon us soon !

This is often intermingled with conspiracy tales of the impending new world order by people like Robodoon to again try and scare us into believing what they believe.

Judgement day is nigh, the satanic new world order is proof of this !

You really must try harder if that is your goal.

Your irrational fear of imaginary realms nourishes me.

You crack me up, really!  What you fail to comprehend is that I fear nothing.

Slug, what a cool picture!  Is it a Bohemian Grove sacrifice scene?

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

Me too.

As do I.

This earth is the most challenging plane of existence our souls will experience.  It is temporal and sensory, governed by both the very best and the very worst humankind has to offer.

It is a place of striking and often painful contrasts.  One moment, we notice glorious acts of human charity, while the next we behold disturbing acts of human avarice.

I do not believe in a literal hell - a physical place with fire and such imaginings; instead, I believe "hell" is feeling remote from God - the very worst state a soul can endure.

If there were a literal hell, however, I would say it is on this earth.  With the gift of free will, we human beings have perpetrated horrific crimes upon one another.

In His infinite Mercy, God loves us all despite this.

Amazing.

What an excellent post, Britt, and one with which I totally agree.  Yes, separation from God = hell.

I'm coming to have a new opinion about most religious concepts. Many of these pre-date the religions and no longer exist except as a religious concept.

Perhaps hell is where you go until the evil you've done has disappeared. The chaos you've wrought and the confusion you cause puts you in hell, where you stay until the rifts are healed.

The ancient Egyptians believed your heart was weighed by the Gods when you died. If it was lighter than a feather, you got into heaven.

Hell is the darkness of ignorance, which envelops sentient creatures, when they have lost the contemplation of God.  The Desert Fathers

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

Hell ?..................meh !

  • A clergyman earns his living by assuring idiots that he can save them from an imaginary hell.
  • According to Christianity, eternal suffering awaits anyone who questions God's infinite love. That's the message we're brought up with: believe or die. "Thank you, forgiving Lord, for all those options."
  • An idea, which has terrified millions, claims that some of us will go to a place called Hell, where we will suffer eternal torture. This does not scare me because, when I try to imagine a Mind behind this universe, I cannot conceive that Mind, usually called "God," as totally mad. I mean, guys, compare that "God" with the worst monsters you can think of - Adolph Hitler, Joe Stalin, that sort of guy. None of them ever inflicted more than finite pain on their victims. Even de Sade, in his sado-masochistic fantasy novels, never devised an unlimited torture. The idea that the Mind of Creation (if such exists) wants to torture some of its critters for endless infinities of infinities seems too absurd to take seriously. Such a deranged Mind could not create a mud hut, much less the exquisitely mathematical universe around us.
  • Go to Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company.
  • Imagine there's no heaven. It's easy if you try. No hell below us, Above us, only sky.
  • It is Hell, of course, that makes priests powerful, not Heaven, for after thousands of years of so-called civilization fear remains the one common denominator of mankind.
