That's very interesting, Construct. Having never read any of the books, I learned much from this little essay.

I have been wondering for some time now if Frodo was gay. I suppose a similar question could be asked of other Tolkein characters or even Tolkein himself.

I read a biography of Tolkein a few months ago that repeatedly stressed that he was not gay. The question of Tolkein's sexuality was of less interest to me than the biographer's fretting over the question.

I was wondering if that horrid little imp with the lisp (What was his name? Gollum?) was gay.

That could be, Construct.

Tolkein lived in a thouroughly male world. It would make sense that at least his emotionally intimate relationships were almost entirely with men. It would surprise me in the slightest if there were other more explicitly sexual aspects to these relationships. Whether or not any of that is "gay" is difficult to answer when speaking of someone living in another time and place. Sexualities have their histories and geographies.

Well, yes. English public schools and all that! There has been recuring speculation about C.S. Lewis as well. But these are follows that would never have been able to come to terms with their homosexuality if they were homosexual in the first place. These are folk are no Noel Coward!

It makes one wonder about the friendship and falling out of Lewis and Tolkein. I read that JRR figured Lewis' Narnia books were a cheap knockoff of his Lord of the Rings work. Lewis asked JRR to read his work and JRR gave him a frank assessment that Lewis didn't want to hear. Could it be that there was more to this exchange than literary criticism?

Oh, who knows? Lewis had nothing nice to say about homosexuals. That's for sure.

C.S.Lewis was a devout Christian, many of his Narnia books contain many biblical elements and parables drawn directly from the bible.

As in The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe, Aslan the lion sacrifices himself for the greater good only to be resurrected.

As for the British reaction to Dumbledore being gay ?, it has mostly been a case of..............
