But I digress, the book is The Hermeneutic Tradition: From Ast to Ricoeur. It looks pretty good if you ask me.

Construct, you have done some hermeneutical study as a seminarian, yes?

So this is like the anything goes whatever thread for people who don't subscribe to a particular organized religion?  Or more extreme (i.e. people who are atheists, evil, etc.)?

Well, I didn't take any courses that were specifically about theories of interpretation. What I've learned was in conjunction with other courses and what I've read on my own.

The term 'hermeneutics' itself has a broad and a narrow definition. I tend to use the term to mean theory of textual interpretation; but when you read the French poststructuralists, you find they use it to mean a skeptical approach to texts, trying to get behind the text to find its real meaning (authorial intent) or even a meaning unknown or repressed by the author--a project that they argued was useless at best.

Then there is the problem of whether there should be special rules for interpreting canonical, i.e. culturally foundational, texts. For these texts, I think the history of interpretations (or usage) is at least as important as the texts themselves.

Much as I appreciate your lame attempt at marginlizing, stereotyping, labelling and pigeon holing lots of different members with lots of different ideas that are contrary to your own (how typical to lump everyone who disagrees with together !), I think I will pass your invitation to frolic in the little fenced off pen you have created for us in your infinite wisdom.

I stay out of the Christian forum now out of respect and because I have no interest in it, I will continue to post my view on anything anyone (including you JBF) posts in the wider religion/philosophy forum in a respectful forum law abiding way whether you like it or not thank you.

This forum (and others) are full of biblical quotes all over the place, if people like you wish to post biblical quotes thats up to you, if I wish to post philosophical/atheist/rational quotes thats up to me.

It will be _very much_ more convoluted , confusing, and twisted about itself if Sum and Construct start swapping 24-syllable philosophy terms about.

Personally, I knew that the deeper things in philosophy were not for me when I realised that my professor could spent one entire hour discussing how a rock might exist for me within my perception, but that for him or anyone else, the aforementioned rock may or may not have had to have  a physical manifestation of anything generally defined as existence in anyone's common understanding of what it might have meant to exist in Greek times or as it might have meant to exist as a rock in Medieval times.

By the time he was through with the one hour lecture on day 1 of Philosophy 101, I realised he'd said only four sentences in the entire hour, that none of them had defined anything whatsoever in any kind of firm and agreed-upon way, and that he wasn't sure if he existed or not, much less me or the rock, or anything else for that matter.

So at that point, I decided that until he knew he existed, I wasn't going to be sure I should attend a class that might not exist in either his or my perception, with a professor who might not exist even in his own perception, etc etc

so I dropped the class. Quickly. At least I think I did.
I might only have perceived that I thought about dropping the class, I don't know for sure.

I did tell him that I'd vote for him if he ran for any sort of office, because it was clear that he was a master at saying many many things, without actually saying or admitting to anything conclusive at all, or actually clarifying anything about anything at all. Much like a politician.

I've also noticed that since that time, I'm occasionally not sure whether I have really had a thought or not, or whether I mostly think I have thoughs.

I'm much more certain however that MANY other people do not have thoughts, at least based upon my empirical analysis of their actions.

Armed with the power of Thy name nothing can ever hurt me, and with Thy love in my heart all the world's afflictions can in no wise alarm me.
