Bahá'í House of Worship
There are only seven purpose-built Bahá'í Houses of Worship around the world today. Most meetings occur in houses or local Bahá'í centres. According to Bahá'í belief, Houses of Worship must be nine sided and have domes. Although it is not necessary, the seven existing structures all face their meetings towards the shrine of Bahá'u'lláh, in Israel.

*******************************************************************

There are many places of worship in the world that are a ridiculous example of wealth and what I call actual "Building Worship". This is just one example of a building in the Baha'i Faith. Why do Baha'i Houses of Worship have to be nine sided and have domes?

God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.

Acts 17:24

“However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says:
      ' Heaven is My throne,
      And earth is My footstool.
What house will you build for Me? says the LORD,
Or what is the place of My rest?

Acts 7:48-49

Jesus said, "Take heed that no one deceives you."

Matthew 24:4

Another example of ridiculous spending of God's money for a so-called place of worship.

An attractive building draws people to enter so that they will hear the message that is being preached.

What do you mean by "so-called" places of worship? What evidence can you present that those buildings, Baha'i and otherwise, are NOT places to worship God?

In the Baha'i Faith the number nine symbolizes unity, which is the concept at the core of our doctrine, and in this case means all religions converge on the same God. I don't know why we have domes.

Notice I posted two buildings from two different faiths?::wiseman::

My point in this post is the ridiculous amount of money spent on housing people when God doesn't care about the buildings made with hands. We have starving people in the world and a call for charity yet spend millions and millions of dollars on cushy chairs and big screens to watch the pastor or people perform in front of us.

This reminds me of Jesus speaking to the church of the Laodiceans.

“And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked

I'm building a 400 foot long paper mache replica of satans ass.

Will that be considered "worship building" ?

I am also building a large fibre glass replica of the genitals of Bacchus.

Is that considered bad taste ?

I think your going to be ok on that one ninja. Using paper mache is not excessive and then you can use your other available resources for worship of Satan or Bacchus. Actually, I think you have given a great example of efficient use of funds and resources and the rest can be for the kingdom of Satan as you may choose. :)

Thats good news !, Bacchus was actually more insistent about the drinks cabinet being fully stocked, more interested in that than the creation of his phallic totem.

"As long as its big enough !" he said, "wheres the keg and the spirits ?, I'll keep those in my room if thats ok ?,  as far as the totem goes ?........girth is more important than length so I'm told".

Satan is much less forthcoming.........

"Do what you want !, I don't care !, the only thing I ever loved was god......and that was a very long time ago"

"An attractive building draws people to enter so that they will hear the message that is being preached."

I have mixed feels on this issue.

It's good to attract people to hear the message but to what extremes should we go in attracting them? If a "nice" functional facility can be built for $5 million to accommodate 5,000 is spending ten times that much to make it more attractive the best use of that money?

Having said that my idea of nice, based on middle-class American standards, may be far different then the version of nice in remote parts of Africa or Beverly Hills, CA. Some might describe the first temple in the Old Testament as extravagant (many of the articles used in the building of the temple were overlayed with gold).

Ultimately the physical building is of little importance other then its utility as a convenient place for worship, prayer, fellowship and teaching.

I agree unnecessary extravagance is uncalled for.

These temples are elegant, but by no means extravagant.  Very simple interior decor.  They are designed as places to praise God.  That is their sole purpose.  There are no sermons, no pulpits, only words of Praise are uttered within the Temple themselves.  Members of all Faiths (or no Faith) are welcome.

If Baha'i's are building the Kingdom of God on Earth.  First we must build the foundation and the infrastructure.   These buildings are the beginning of this venture.  And each came into existence as a result of great personal sacrifice of Baha'i's around the world.   We do not accept donations from anyone who is not Baha'i.  So the relatively few #'s of Baha'i's have risen to the challenge each time it is raised.  Though the effort often spans decades.

The construction of the North American Temple in Illinois began in 1912 with the laying of the corner stone, and was not completed until 1953.  Due in part to other obligations which take precedence and cannot be forgotten.

We are currently only seeing a glimpse of what future Baha'i Houses of Worship will entail...

"Speaking of the temple of the future, Abdul Baha says -- "Every country has a hundred thousand gigantic temples, but what results have they yielded? The important point is this -- from a temple of worship must go forth not only the spiritual but the material needs. Verily, the founding of this temple will mark the inception of the Kingdom of God on earth. It is the evident standard waving in the center of the great continent of America.

"The doors will be open to all sects -- no differentiation; and by God's help this temple will prove to be to the body of human society what the soul is to the body of man. For when these colleges for the study of higher sciences, the hospital, the orphanage and the hospice are built, its doors will be opened to all nations, races and religions, with no line of demarkation and its charities will be dispensed without regard to race or color. Its gates will be flung wide to mankind; prejudice toward none, love for all. The central building will be dedicated to prayer and worship and thus for the first time religion will become harmonized with science and science will be the handmaid of religion -- both showering their spiritual gifts on all humanity. In this way the people will be lifted out of the quagmires of slothfulness and bigotry."" (Abdu'l-Baha, Divine Philosophy, p. 13)
