Did Jesus ever exist?

It's not a commonly asked question. Even many non-christians still just assume that there was a figure in history named Jesus. There has never been a shred of physical evidence discovered to support a historical Jesus. No artifacts or dwelling, and not a single piece of contemporary writing that mentions Jesus. All documents written about him were written well after his death. The only documentation about Jesus was by unknown authors, or people who had never met an earthly Jesus - long after his alleged execution. All accounts of his existence were hearsay. None of the historians about Jesus give reliable sources to eyewitnesses; therefore all we have remains as hearsay.

Given that the events of Jesus' life were so fantastical and filled with displays of the supernatural and sorcery, it's difficult to believe that nobody thought to document the events during his lifetime.

It's astounding that this mythological character Jesus has had such devastating effect on history. The likelihood that he ever existed in the first place, is tantamount to the existence of Hercules.

It's something I have thought about for a while now. I do find it interesting that the existence of the historical Jesus rarely comes into question, considering the complete lack of evidence - especially considering that all of tales of this character's miracles and sorcery resemble mythology and folklore rather than any acceptable historical truth.

It speaks to my main problem about just assuming that archaic text written, assembled, edited, and under the control of people, was from God.

Another STUPID THREAD #2. I might expel a little energy later on this one. :)

This one is old hat.  I would have thought this member would pose a much more modern, non-archaic, un-circular deception to the table?

I don't know what you mean. I find it totally suspect that so much is missing about someone so famous. No real info on his life? There are how many pages about FOOD in the Bible, and none on the bulk of Jesus' life?

::beathorse:: Go on-line. Look around. Tacitus, Josephus and some non-Christian writers are out there...

Maybe someone needs to PROVE He has never existed? Has that been done yet?

See? The whole question ends up DOA. Circular argument. No punch line for the Atheists. Try again.

I am not asserting that Jesus never existed, but I am asking how do you explain the lack of info on Jesus' life? I am seriously asking. How do you? What is the Christian answer to this?

Circular argument?

Both Tacitus and Josephus had authored works left behind. Tacitus in particular had written a significant amount in his lifetime. What written work did Jesus leave behind?

The same can be said for Alexander the Great, who left a wake of destroyed and created cities behind. There are buildings, libraries and cities, such as Alexandria, left in his name. There are treaties, and even a letter from Alexander to the people of Chios, engraved in stone, dated at 332 B.C.

For Agustus Caesar, we have the Res gestae divi augusti, the emperor's own account of his works and deeds, a letter to his son (Epistula ad Gaium filium), Virgil's eyewitness accounts, and much more. There is also the image of Augustus Caesar cast on denarius coins.

What keeps historians from dismissing these historical figures as mere myths is that there is some residue. We know at least a bit of mundane information about them, perhaps quite a bit, that does not form part of any legend cycle.

There are descriptions of facial qualities, height, weight, hair length & colour, age and even portraits of most important historical figures. But for Jesus, we have nothing. Nowhere in the Bible is there a description of the human shape of Jesus. How can we rely on the Gospels as the word of Jesus when no one even describes what he looked like?

I guess it's because He was crucified before He got around to assigning book and movie rights to His life.

You have the four gospels (three of which were written by people who actually knew him) and a letter from Jesus' brother. What more do you want?

Questions like this help explain to me what happens when some of those clinical drug trials go wrong.

Construct:

Do we know for certain that the authors were the actual apostles?  And before you establish the historicity of Jesus, how in the world does one establish that he had a brother at all?  What if I claimed to be Kathy Ireland's ex-boyfriend from high school and wrote a book about it that was found 75 years from now?  (Arguably, it's not a fair comparison, since so much more has been written  about Ms. Ireland's life that's contemporaneous.)
