I've been thinking about this for some time. If vegetables go to heaven do they ever rot, or turn moldy, or smell bad? Do they go to hell, or perhaps purgatory or limbo? What do you think, do vegetables deserve a place in heaven? Oh, and what about fruits?

The bible say's that "Flesh and blood does not inherit the kingdom of God." One can only assume that the spiritual body does not require food as the earthly body of flesh and blood needs to survive. Although Jesus made a statement regarding Communion that put's another twist on this question...::scratch::

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.” And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Abba Antony said, “Obedience with abstinence gives men control over wild beasts.”

Abba Theon ate vegetables, but only those that did not need to be cooked. They say that he used to go out of his cell at night and stay in the company of the wild animals, giving them drink from the water he had. Certainly one could see the tracks of antelopes and wild asses and gazelles and other animals near his hermitage. These creatures always gave him pleasure.

Once when a hippopotamus was ravaging the neighbouring countryside the fathers called on Abba Bes to help them. He stood at the place and waited and when he saw the beast, which was of enormous size, he commanded it not to ravage the countryside any more, saying, “In the name of Jesus Christ, I order you not to ravage this countryside anymore.” The hippopotamus vanished completely from that district as if driven away by an angel.

Abba Xanthios said, “A dog is better than I am, for he has love and he does not judge.”  The Desert Fathers

Interesting-

I think it's the first time I've seen JBF be both literalistic to the hilt in the first half of the verse and then symbolic on the back half.

My take:

The Bible says what it means "flesh and blood (eg, our bodies) WILL NOT be in "heaven"
The concepts used in other places in the Bible I believe  are intended to allay primitive people's fears that they would simply disappear-- since in their age, "their body" was what they most identified with as being "them" - so Christ didn't tell them anything that would cause them fear and concern of heaven like "you're going to be a ball of energy, or a cloud of vapor, or 'you're not going to physically exist"

He, in His infinite Wisdom, knew that they were better off believing that they would have "some sort" of a body -- and I don't doubt that we will have "some sort" of a set of boundaries to our souls-- call it an energy field, a magnetosphere, what have you..

but I don't believe for a MOMENT that we will have 'flesh and blood bodies with two arms and two legs and only two eyes, etc"
I don't think we will be NEARLY that limited--- we will have FAR FAR FAR more freedom than we have now, trapped in bodies that cannot fly, cannot be anywhere they want at any instant, etc--

And as for the second mentioning-- I don't think Jesus is referring to the wine in it's literal sense--- I think He is referring to the Wine in it's Sacred sense, not just in terms of the liquid in the glasses.

WOW. When I saw this thread title I assumed it was a discussion about brain-dead people. I never would assume a discussion about plants being saved by the grace of God.
