Some species feel the pain of their kind dying.  Primates suffer it, as do humans.  I think death might be the reason for religion.  I think when we lose someone close to us to death, we can't believe the pain is real.  We can't believe something that terrible and permanent could or should happen.  We can't believe life is as scary as that.  So I suspect wanting, needing, or wondering about an afterlife is what sparked "religion."  Fear of injury or death is something socially intelligent species are very emotional about.  A possible continuation after death is the only possible pain relief.  When there is a need, a solution is found.  And I think the need to help out with the literally unbelievable sadness and pain of death found a solution in religion.

I don't know about that Frank.  I was raised an Atheist, and have only in the last 10 years started believing.  As a non believer, I believed that once you die, that's it!!  You are gone, no more pain, no more anything!!  What on earth is wrong with that concept?  If I were to believe that Mark didn't know anything, and was just laying in a deep sleep, so to speak, then why would I feel bad for him?  If the same happened to me after I died, I wouldn't know anything either!  To me, it's harder sometimes TO believe, or to try and believe.  Then and only then comes the wondering...........Where do we really go?  Is there truly a heaven, if so what's it like?  What if our loved ones go to this place called hell?  That's a scary thought!!   People say to me, Mark knows you love him and are trying to take care of "whatever"!  Well if he can see down here, he wouldn't be at peace believe me!!  Sometimes, what you don't know can't hurt you.............works for me.

I hear you Fox. The Hell thing is another item I find interesting. The notion that a loving God would send you to Hell for all eternity if you sin (or sin enough I guess), yet "loves" you, is over the top to me.

Well, I don't think He sends you to Hell just because you sin.  If I have this right, and JBF will correct me if I'm wrong,  <heh>  He only sends you to Hell if you don't believe his son died for all you're sins!!  So.......your ticket, so to speak, is you really in your heart have to believe Jesus died for you.  That's it!  Lot's of religions will tell you that you'll only get in by your good deeds.  I think the Bible, tells you otherwise.  So to break it down.  If God was willing to allow His son to die in order that all our sins be forgiven, then the least he could expect, is for us to acknowledge that and love him for it.  If we don't, then he can't help us.........we're on our own!

So if one is born into a religion that does not believe in Jesus Christ like that, God will punish them (sweet old lady who just happens to be Jewish or some other religion) for all eternity in burning Hell. But he loves her. Come on now, that's just ridiculous ...

Well you have to remember one thing here........I didn't write the Bible!  I'm telling you what my understanding of a free pass to Hell is.  I might also add, I don't personally understand or agree with everything in the Bible.  Now that doesn't mean I don't believe in God......it means I find a lot of stuff in the Bible, hard to swallow.  But then, I find a lot of religions hard to swallow too.........

Right... I am just saying, it is ridiculous to me, personally, that if you were born into a religion that does not happen to use the Bible, the God that "loves you" will severely punish and torture your sweet little old lady or man rear end to burning HELL for all ETERNITY!

Yep!  Pretty cut and dried isn't it?  Simple, and yet, not so simple at all.  Maybe this is why Christians try so hard to spread the word.  If this is true, then people need to listen.  If not, then it doesn't really matter anyway.  Are you willing to take that chance?

Let me ask you this, if in fact this is all true.  Would you go to Hell just because you thought God was unfair?  Or would you save your ass, and start believing, no matter what you thought of him?   Keep in mind, I've already told you how I feel about this,  I'm in the believing in God, but I've molded him into who I want him to be.  I DON'T agree with everything in the Bible.  I'm just asking you the question, because I'm curious of your answer...........

It's the same chance we all take - who knows if we are picking the right religion?

That's like saying, you know, some people believe that if you do not say the word "shazzam" at least once a year, a monster will come and kill you.  Are you willing to take that chance?

I don't believe God would be "unfair" or punish people by making them burn in Hell, even though they were kind, sweet, charitable people, because like billions of innocent people on this planet, they are born into some other religion.  That is part of the reason why these obviously man-inspired and man-made religious clubs are archaic, irrelevant, and unncessary to me in order to have your own feelings, beliefs, and experiences as valid as anyone else.

Your comments assume the Bible is the word of God and that religions which embrace it are more valid or real or God-condoned than the others.  I don't subscribe to that point of view.

It is plainly and totally absurd to me that sweet people who live good lives will burn in Hell for all eternity because they were raised Jewish.  AND GOD LOVES THEM.  Oh Please!!

I don't buy it.  It is ridiculous on all levels.  These religious clubs try to make sense and sell a story which can't make sense.   Reason: it is all man-made.

I respect and understand your answers totally.  ::rose::   Two more questions if I may.  Do you believe in Heaven?  If so, what do you think It's like?  I know I've just opened a huge book on that description!!

I have no idea if there is a Heaven. All I can tell you is that it seems like something that ties right into our emotional needs and the reasons for religion to begin with (that I asserted earlier). I hope to see you in Heaven if there is one, though! BUT, since I don't have reason to select one particular religion and subscribe to the whole Jesus and born with sin stuff, I will be burning in Hell for all eternity, forever tortured and suffering. But God loves me.
