Yes of course. It's like you asking what does "Hey, eat this bread" mean when you are implying it is actual bread that you can eat.

"Let's go to Church." to mean it brings back memories of childhood. And the thoughts of "darn, back to that hot building to sit for an hour. sit. stand. kneel. be quiet! stop it! don't tickle your sister! behave!" I was always a very spiritual child, but I rarely felt the spirit of what I knew it should be, in a church. But I've always held that spirit in my heart. That is His true home. 59. O SON OF BEING! Thank you all for your input. " And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body." Ephesians 1:21-22 " And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things He may have the preeminence." Colossians 1:18 " Christ is the head of the church, and He is the savior of the body." Ephesians 5:23

If you say "let's go to church", to most Christians you mean "let's go to our building of worship, and possibly worship (or perhaps just have fellowship or a choir practice)" If you say "I'm going to my church" people will take you to mean the same thing. If however, you say "I'm in my church", and you're clearly NOT standing inside a church, then people will stop and begin to think about what you might be getting at in spiritual terms. That's pretty simple and clear, I think.

My response is also based pretty much in the standard English usage- as most people do so, using the first and most common meaning of a word as daily used. However, it would be an interesting question to put to someone who didn't have English as a first language, yet was a Christian. My bet would be that they, too, have been led to think of a church as a "place", given the large numbers of churches immediately built by most Christian missionaries in foreign lands. (even if those meeting places aren't really built so much as they are someone's house, apartment, etc) they would still tend to think of a physical place first.

JustifiedByFaith wrote: Does the saying, "Do you want to go to Church?" incite any negative feelings for anyone? Yes. I really don't like "Church" and was turned against it as a child by neighbor kids. If I want to talk with God, I prefer to do so in private. I am a believer, and I really like JBF'S fellowship members in their Church however, I just don't feel comfortable in church.l To make it even harder, the MINUTE they start singing, I want to cry. It just brings sadness to my heart.......and I want to leave. I suppose, that's because they play songs at funerals..............
