Yes, because in a lot of peoples mind the building is the church. They don't think of it in terms as what your signature says about the early church being the Christians themselves.

Yes of course. It's like you asking what does "Hey, eat this bread" mean when you are implying it is actual bread that you can eat.

"Let's go to Church."

to mean it brings back memories of childhood.  And the thoughts of "darn, back to that hot building to sit for an hour. sit. stand. kneel. be quiet! stop it! don't tickle your sister! behave!" :littleangel:    Listening to everyone recite verses they had memorized, no feeling attached.  It was merely fulfilling an obligation to most.

I was always a very spiritual child, but I rarely felt the spirit of what I knew it should be, in a church.  But I've always held that spirit in my heart.  That is His true home.

59. O SON OF BEING! :heartbeat: Thy heart is My home; sanctify it for My descent. Thy spirit is My place of revelation; cleanse it for My manifestation. (Baha'u'llah, The Arabic Hidden Words)

Thank you all for your input.

" And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body."

Ephesians 1:21-22

" And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things He may have the preeminence."

Colossians 1:18

" Christ is the head of the church, and He is the savior of the body."

Ephesians 5:23

Jesus said, "Take heed that no one deceives you."

Matthew 24:4

If you say "let's go to church", to most Christians you mean "let's go to our building of worship, and possibly worship (or perhaps just have fellowship or a choir practice)"

If you say "I'm going to my church" people will take you to mean the same thing.

If however, you say "I'm in my church", and you're clearly NOT standing inside a church, then people will stop and begin to think about what you might be getting at in spiritual terms.

That's pretty simple and clear, I think.

My response is also based pretty much in the standard English usage- as most people do so, using the first and most common meaning of a word as daily used.

However, it would be an interesting question to put to someone who didn't have English as a first language, yet was a Christian.

My bet would be that they, too, have been led to think of a church as a "place", given the large numbers of churches immediately built by most Christian missionaries in foreign lands.
(even if those meeting places aren't really built so much as they are someone's house, apartment, etc)

they would still tend to think of a physical place first.

Yes.  I really don't like "Church" and was turned against it as a child by neighbor kids.  If I want to talk with God, I prefer to do so in private.  I am a believer, and I really like JBF'S fellowship members in their Church however, I just don't feel comfortable in church.l  To make it even harder, the MINUTE they start singing, I want to cry.  It just brings sadness to my heart.......and I want to leave.  I suppose, that's because they play songs at funerals..............
