Isn't that the main action religion wants its followers to be and do - good?  Isn't not being "evil" and "bad" and staying away from bad behaviors and activities the action goal?  That's how they want you to live your life.

I think this is why so many people are OK with not really being religious or joining an organized religion.  They get it.  Be good, behave, be nice.  Don't be evil.  And there is plenty of punishment if you are not good.  Got it.

Plus, that is a basic need or our type of social structure so it basically fits.

I tend to think if there is a Loving God, God just wants you to be good.  You don't have to pick a religion or worship in groups and stuff.  That's my take on it, anyway.

So BE GOOD.  ::giveflowers::

OR ELSE.  ::gohell::

It's not "Be good or else." but "Believe or else."

I think it's a little more complicated than that, unfortunately, Frank.

First, you have to define "good".  Not every religion agrees on what "good" is.  Protestants in the Middle Ages, for example, destroyed Catholic iconography because it violated their interpretation of the commandment forbidding graven images.  And I don't think any Christians would consider people venerating the Buddha to be "good".

Second, there's the question of whether or not it's even possible to be "good".  There are strains of Christianity that say there's no such thing as a "good" person, and that trying to be "good" will get you nowhere (well, somewhere, just not somewhere good).

Right, but basically, they call for what their society deems good behavior. They all threaten you with punishments if you don't engage in the right decisions and acts. There are a bazillion rules woven in, teaching or guiding you how to spend your time and what to think. To conform to a desired way of life (set of decisions, actions, and views).

So, be good - i.e. be the kind of person we say God wants you to be, OR ELSE.

Well, that's a no-brainer.  But it's also not too informative to how a person should live, right?  What good does it do to behave a certain way that my village teaches, when the shaman in the next village east actually has it right, and my village has it ass-backwards?

Being the kind of good you've been raised to be might be just good enough to get you cooked on Low Heat rather than High Heat in the Deep Fryer. :giantgrin:

That's sort of my point. ::shades::  That is why organized religions differ.  You said it's not too informative but I was paraphrasing, or giving you the bottom line.  The details that would be informative are in the writings of that particular organized religion.

So my point, BE GOOD OR ELSE, is to me the core action goal.  Be like we say God wants you to be or we say you will be punished.

I never bought that such a method would be the divine way to spread the word.
