Have all the breweries and restaurants been alerted that God, in some sort of weird micro-management effort, has banned alcohol?

Heh.  I only drink once in a while.  Like this weekend I know I will be because I am having company and we are celebrating and eating out a lot and stuff.  God hasn't made me think this is a problem.

Frank,

You can never drink, help old ladies cross the street, raise your children better than any other dad and never say one cuss word in your life but go straight to hell at death.

It's not about avoiding certain beverages or what you do that you need to worry about...

Jesus said, "Take heed that no one deceives you."

Of course.  Why expect anything else from a Loving God?  ::rotfl::

Hey, if you want the God of Rules to get to heaven... I can point you to a few different clubs?

I am confused.  Should I or should I not be agreeing that one should expect what is below from a Loving God:

You can never drink, help old ladies cross the street, raise your children better than any other dad and never say one cuss word in your life but go straight to hell at death.

That sounds great.  Not archaic or outdated at all.  Pure love right there.

You think God pops in 1000 years into your burning eternal torture to remind you that it is for your own good and that he really loves you?  ::rotfl::

Since this topic is called "The BIG problem with modern religions" I just want to point out the BIG problem with archaic ones and how they are generally worse. Hell is a disqualifier. No Loving God I was born to acknowledge would so cruelly torture me for all eternity, especially even though I was a good person as you described.  Hell punishment for not buying a man product 2000 years ago is absurd.  So if anything, modern religions are better because at least they tend to promote a healthy form of Love instead of the absurdity of a maniacal, brutal, torturing God.  I will take something that isn't impossible for me to accept.  Love.  Not some primitive, archaic, crazy, superstitious, brutal punishment that lasts forever in a furnace. That kind of love is tied up in brutal slavery, the butchering of family and children if they are non-believers, and stoning people until their heads crack open for not being virgins on their wedding night or working on the Sabbath. If I had to pick a religion, Hell would be a disqualifier. Not because there is punishment or some unpleasantness, but because it is so extreme, brutal, and nasty, it's not believable as being the product of any God I know I was born to recognize.

I believe that GOD DOES NOT TORTURE.

In the "pick a religion" method... one has too "suppress" the One who was made flesh and dwelt among men named Jesus. In the "pick a religion" method... one has to pick based solely on personal preferences like choosing a car or a cut of meat at the local store. In the "pick a religion" method...one has to "ignore" hell at the very core of such a thought in the hopes of finding or re-creating a different reality or different god. A god who serves self but one who requires no service in return.

What is the approved "method" of selecting a religion, then?  What JBF currently likes?  If a religion says something as absurd as a Loving God will torture you forever in burning Hell even though you are a good person as you previously described, we should all just buy it as if we lost our sense of critical thought or reasoning?

How has critical thought or reasoning brought you to truth?

Without believing in a Loving God, we might as well be the play pets of some alien, like lab rats, watching how half us always fight, starve, watch each other die, watching how we try to figure out ways to answer what is going on.  We literally might as well be just another species play thing for some alien experimenter.

And a Loving God would not be into torture.

I am OK thinking and feeling.  I was built to do that.  I was NOT built to just believe some archaic text because other people decided to, especially if it ever embraced the ridiculous thought that God would issue guidelines on how to beat the crap out of your human property, perhaps a child bought on market to never see their family again ... or call for the butchering of women, children, and family because of what they believe, leaving kids without parents or people without loved ones from the butchering aftermath.

It doesn't make sense and when something doesn't make sense that much, it tells me it's BS.

I don't know too many things I am willing to accept as the Truth, but a Loving God not being into torture or issuing such material is one of them.

Well, unfortunately... the god you desire is available to believe in.

Am I supposed to desire a God that would torture me unbelievably and forever, even if I was the good person you described earlier, for all eternity in fire?  Why would I a want that type of medieval brutality to be what my God is into?

You're kidding, right?

If not; I suggest you take a deep breath and re-evaluate.  You do know that cognitive distortion is not a virtue, don't  you, JBF? Cognitive distortion is when contrary to the facts one insists on holding on to a particular belief. Critical thought and reasoning is a part of free will.

I don't think or believe Jesus would want anyone to forego either reasoning or critical thought. On the other hand, I can see how you may believe conscious knowledge is a stumbling block to being a true Christian.
