Why did they pick up stones? Because they were a mob provoked by the  Pharisees.

Let's look at more of the tenth chapter of John (This is the Darby version but we can use whatever you like):

22Now the feast of the dedication was celebrating at Jerusalem, and it was winter.

23And Jesus walked in the temple in the porch of Solomon.
24The Jews therefore surrounded him, and said to him, Until when dost thou hold our soul in suspense? If thou art the Christ, say [so] to us openly.
25Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye do not believe. The works which I do in my Father's name, these bear witness concerning me:
26but ye do not believe, for ye are not of my sheep, as I told you.
 27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me;
28and I give them life eternal; and they shall never perish, and no one shall seize them out of my hand.
29My Father who has given [them] to me is greater than all, and no one can seize out of the hand of my Father.
30I and the Father are one.
31The Jews therefore again took stones that they might stone him.
32Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewn you of my Father; for which work of them do ye stone me?
33The Jews answered him, For a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy, and because thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
34Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
35If he called *them* gods to whom the word of God came (and the scripture cannot be broken),
36do ye say of him whom the Father has sanctified and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest, because I said, I am Son of God?
 37If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not;
38but if I do, even if ye believe not me, believe the works, that ye may know [and believe] that the Father is in me and I in him.
39They sought therefore again to take him; and he went away from out of their hand
40and departed again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptising at the first: and he abode there.
41And many came to him, and said, John did no sign; but all things which John said of this [man] were true.
42And many believed on him there.

------------------------------------------------------

In the belief system of the Jews of the day, all were children of God--sons and daughters, so Jesus pointed out that His claim, if He ever had made one, was in no way blasphemous.

Note that here He is challenging the Pharisees to judge Him by the fruits of His teachings.

Regards,

Scott

No, because they were TOLD they might stone him for blasphemy by those who had provoked them.

Ofr course, if they HAD stoned him they would have been tried by the Romans and probably crucified for their efforts.

All that aside, Jesus showed them that they were all equally sons of God, just like He, Himself was Son of God.

I did read it. WHy didn't you?

Dear friend,

Line 33 clearly states that those Jews who were present judged Jesus to be a blasphemer based on their understanding of their own Scriptures; the same as you do when others don't go along with your interpretation of the New Testament.

However, Jesus did, also, often speak against the Pharisees who no doubt so invested in themselves that they wanted others to not follow Jesus; again, the same as you tell others that they will go to hell if they don't follow your interpretation of the Bible.

When you wrote the item below to me, I thought you were pretty clearly letting me know that I can be a very good, helpful, positive, well-behaved and productive member of society ... but if I don't subscribe to your particular faith and interpretation of Bible -  I will find my loving God lovingly sending me to burning and be burned and tortured (lovingly) for all eternity (which is the best way to show love).

You wrote:

It's not about avoiding certain beverages or what you do that you need to worry about...

What I "needed to worry about" was what you claim about the Bible, right?

It's not MY particular interpretation of the bible as Free.man wrote. Doesn't this read pretty plainly?

"He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true. For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure. The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand. He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

No, that does not mean nasty torture by a Loving God for all eternity, nor does it mean what you said below.  One has to have your particular take to go from that to this:

You can never drink, help old ladies cross the street, raise your children better than any other dad and never say one cuss word in your life but go straight to hell at death

Dear friend,

JBF writes: [It's not MY particular interpretation of the bible as Free.man wrote. Doesn't this read pretty plainly?]

"He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true. For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure. He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

John 3:33-36

There is no doubt the quote you provided is plain enough.

Here it is in transliterated Greek:

He receiving of Him the witness has sealed that - God true. is (He)whom for sent - God, the words - of God speaks; not for by measure gives - God the Spirit. The Father loves the Son, and all things has given into the hand of Him. The(one) believing into the Son has life everlasting; the (one) but disobeying the Son not will see life, but the wrath - of God remains on him. -- The Interlinear Bible

Note: The quote you provided at the end says, "...he who does not believe the Son shall not see life,..." and the quote I provided says, "...the (one) but disobeying the Son not will see life,...".

I am sure you will agree that there is a big difference between "not believe the Son" and "disobeying the Son".

1)There is a notable difference between the translations of the same quote.

2)The quote is reportedly from John the Baptist and has a bearing on the context appropriate to that specific event of the quote that you did not mention. This is called interpreting by omission. The question is how can someone then living in say, for example, China actually disobey the Son if that person never even heard of the Son and was therefore incapable of disobeying Him?

3) You posted the quote for whatever reasons and that demonstrates some degree of interpretation on your part.

4)You provided the quote that was interpreted by someone else showing that you believe in that interpretation. As a matter of fact, as far as I know, the original Greek script is lost and so both you and I are using interpretations from other interpretations, therefore, re-interpreting.

Just sayin.
