there are hundreds of wildfires in florida, the georgia fires have jumped the state line, and the entire state is under a haze of smoke. fires are burning all over the state. we need rain so desperately! i was wondering if any of our members, like Cars and Jess, and i'm sure there are others, are being affected. there are evacuations in progress. i have seen smoke for a couple weeks. i hope the possibility of an early tropical storm gives us a soaking rain. ~~~~
Smoke shrouds rush hour, storm forms offshore.

JOE RIMKUS JR./MIAMI HERALD STAFF
Steele Jackson, 20, of Plantation wipes out on his boogie board in the high surf at Dania Beach. The strong waves are a result of an off-shore weather system that could turn into a tropical storm.
» More Photos Dense smoke from brush fires in Collier County and as far away as Georgia shrouded Tuesday's evening rush hour in much of South Florida as officials grew alarmed over an explosion of wildfires throughout the state.

Meanwhile, a system that looked suspiciously like an early season tropical storm -- but hasn't produced the necessary thunderstorms -- developed off the Southeast coast and is slowly moving toward land, forecasters said.

Winds from that system helped push smoke from the distant fires into nearly all of Miami-Dade and much of Broward. Thick, acrid white smoke veiled roads, complicating travel, and even intruded into suburban homes and downtown office buildings.

''The 911 system is being inundated with calls,'' said Lt. Eddy Ballester, a spokesman for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

He said the hazy conditions could cause problems for people with chronic pulmonary conditions, such as bronchitis. He said anyone with lung problems should stay indoors, with air conditioners running, and keep their medication nearby.

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center issued an unusual May ''tropical disturbance statement'' and forecasters said they were monitoring the system, even though it was unlikely to grow into a named tropical storm.

The system, centered about 200 miles southeast of the Georgia and South Carolina coasts and moving west at 5 to 10 mph, was partly responsible for South Florida's unusually cool and windy weather, forecasters said.

Gulfstream seas are expected to remain above 12 feet Tuesday and Tuesday night, dangerous rip currents could develop and beach erosion is possible. Surfers turned out along many South Florida beaches and some erosion was evident in parts of Miami Beach.

A hurricane hunter plane is on alert and could be asked to investigate the system Wednesday morning, said James Franklin, a lead hurricane forecaster.

''This clearly is not a tropical cyclone yet, however over the next 12, 18, 24 hours, as it moves over a little bit warmer water, we want to be in a position to look at it, if that becomes necessary,'' he said.

In addition to the unusual weather in South Florida, the system is producing gale force winds and heavy surf along the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

Franklin said it has more of the characteristics of a winter-time system than a tropical storm and is likely to stay that way, but it could make the transition into the season's first named storm.

If so, it would be called Andrea.

Though the six-month hurricane season officially begins June 1, records show that a named tropical storm or hurricane has formed during every month of the year.

Hi LC, thanks for thinking of me, we're OK here so far, in the Southern part of FL. :)

As it turns out we will be heading back North Thursday 5/10 so. . . . . . . .

Our friend was turned back from traveling on Alligator Alley yesterday, due to the fire/heavy smoke affecting that road!  Soaking RAIN is desperately needed around here!

thankyou Amy and Hana, but i really feel in no danger. what's frustrating is all the storm has brought so far is high winds to whip up the fires, and no rain!! now when there is a category 4 or 5 hurricane aimed at me, you will see me scared!!

Storm whips up wildfires
Winds from the first named storm of the year fanned wildfires in Georgia and northern Florida on Wednesday, more than three weeks ahead of the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season. Subtropical Storm Andrea, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 kph) and higher gusts, was centered about 135 miles southeast of Savannah, Georgia, as of 11 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
