Is there something from your childhood that can bring back a flood of memories, just by seeing it sitting there? In my case it is the Macaroni Salad Bowl. All the caps are intentional. It was a very revered part of my mother's kitchen from before I was born. It is a large glazed ceramic bowl, very high sides. There were small flower painted on the side.
When it came out, we knew right away, mom was going to make a macaroni salad. You have to understand, nothing , but NOTHING else went into the bowl...not even a potato salad. Just macaroni Salad. There it would sit, proudly on top of the table. Loaded with the salad (always made with shell macaroni, by the way). If it was an extra special occasion mom would put sloces of hard boiled egg on the top, and sprinkle the whole thing with paparika. We were in for a macaroni salad feast.
I have the bowl now. When I moved into my new house, I had an open house picnic. First thing my brother said to me was, I am making a macaroni salad for you, do you have "The Bowl". I did not even have to ask what bowl. I told him I would have it out for him.
When people started to arrive, my cousin took one look at it, from across the room and exclaimed "Great..Macaroni Salad!!" She did not even see yet what was inside.
6 years ago, when I was planning my wedding, my nephew emailed me to ask if we were having macaroni salad at the reception (in a hotel). I said no, and asked why. He said, simple, if you were, you need to have "The Bowl" right in the middle of the buffet table...filled with the salad. I had to laugh, because the thought actually had run through my mind.
So, that is the tale of the bowl. It is still in my cupboard, and has still never held anything besides macaroni salad. Made with small shell macaronis.

Cute story, Marie.  Thanks for sharing!

Mmmmmmmmm...I love a good homemade macaroni salad, especially to have with the meal when we are cooking on the grill on our deck. ::eats:::drool:

Funny thing, I was cleaning out a long forgotten corner of my kitchen cupbioard, found the bowl, and IMMEDIATLY had a desire to make a batch of macaroni salad.  The powers of suggestion at work.
