Here's the place to post any book that you think merits reading by everyone.

I'd like to start with a little known book entitled, "This Perfect Day" by Ira Levin.  He's the author of "The Day of the Dolphin" which, while much more popular, is not nearly as powerful and engaging as this work.

It's the story of a future mankind "The Family," genetically engineered, drugged by treatments, and overseen by a world computer "Unicomp."  This is the book that "Collosus" should have been.  One day on accident the protagonist, LiRM35p2723, known to himself as "Chip" misses his treatment and begins to see the world very differently.  But how can he stop the Mighty Family of Mankind and return creativity and emotion to the world?

On the one hand, the world as run by a computer is ideal and peaceful.  But would we want that?Read this book to see if Rob is right or wrong about world unification.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith.

A Great story about a girl, in early 1900 Brooklyn, growing up and "coming of age".  Her family is poor, her daddy is a drunk, her mom supports them.  They make a feast from day old bread, broth and the ends of meat.

Told in the third person, from the perspective of the young girl.  From the ages of about 12 to 16.

I can read it over and over.

Since I'm no longer a Christian, I think my suggestion of the King James Bible (and the Apocrypha in whatever translation you find) should come as a strong recommendation. It is the classic of Western civilization. Familiarity with its language and stories lends depth of understanding to many other classics of English and American literature.

This recommendation applies to Christians as well. It might be shocking to non-Christians how few Christians have actually read the Bible cover-to-cover.

The only book I've read by Dickens is Bleak House. It's a highly entertaining read. I also recommend it.

The Catcher In the Rye, by J.D. Salinger (The fact that a lot of people have to read it in high school spoils it for some people, but if you read it again, it's a great book.)

The Fountainhead, by Ayn Rand

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman

Both are fairly short, but they are profound!

What's "Amusing" about, Shiroh?  That sounds intersting.

Neil Postman starts his book by writing that each period in American history has a symbol. The Revolutionary Period is represented by the statue of the Minuteman in Boston with one hand on the plow and another on his musket. If there were one for the Industrial Period, he said it would be a statue of a hog butcher in Chicago. He further says that the symbol for our age would be a 30 ft high cardboard cutout of a Las Vegas showgirl because we are a culture devoted to amusing ourselves to death.

The basic premise of the book is that "the medium is the metaphor" (similar to Marshall McLuhan's assertion that "the medium is the message". TV is a metaphor for for entertainment, so everything shown on TV has to be entertaining in order to succeed. Thus news, politics, religion and other "serious" topics are made entertaining to work on TV. We are so devoted to entertainment that we tend to ignore that which isn't entertaining.

Aint that the truth.  Which explains why there is so little footage coming out of Iraq, and even when its on, we tend to change the channel.  It also explains why the recent movies about Iraq are not making money at the box office.  Who wants to pay to be preached at?

Bleak House is rather a convoluted tale, but i loved it. and Masterpiece theater did an EXCELLENT production of it, the characters were perfectly drawn. did you happen to see it?

No. I think I saw a clip from it, but I didn't see the series. I can't imagine trying to film adapt that book for film. I thought the lawsuit that had gone on for generations and that destroys anyone who gets involved in it was very funny. I also found the recurring problem of interpretation and accumulation of written texts very interesting.
