Yes, it has been on the news that a new twenty pound note will be produced to prevent fraudsters.  Apparently the manufacturers are going to be making the note harder for the fraudsters to produce.  When I get an update on this, I will post it here.  Unfortunately, I heard this on the radio (as well as TV) which is the fastest way to get the news rather than the newspaper. :littleangel:

It is already in circulation. We got a few of them at the racecourse yesterday (along with dozens of counterfeit notes as well :verymad:).

They are quite nice the new notes. Very obviously new and stand out from all the other notes.

Won't take the forgers long to get the hang of it though. *sigh* Damn! I hate those people!

I'm amazed by what sounds like a huge problem of counterfeit currency in the UK.

How prevalent is it?

I've also heard they're counterfeiting "round Pounds." Is that true?

I seldom run across "bad" US currency here in the States (or the notes are so good, I can't tell the difference).

I did get some mailed from the far East, but the paper was way off, and you could tell just by touch.

I do, every now and again, get a bad silver coin when sorting a bag of old coins. You get used to the weight of silver coins, and when you pick up a light one it's easy.

Do they heavily counterfeit Euros also?

Charlie

Interesting point there Charlie, it is true that the pound coins are forged, my brother had one and shown it to me.  I don't know how bad counterfeiting is here, I've never looked at the statistics but I'm sure if you search google for information on counterfeiting you might get some interesting results and find what you're looking for.  Sorry I cannot be of any further help to you. :)

Hi Charlie
The reason I come across counterfeit currency is due to one of my jobs. I work as a retail security consultant and this week is the Gold Cup (Huge Racing Event). Hundreds of thousands of pounds pass through the retail units and we need to check for counterfeits etc.

Events like this are the perfect opportunity for counterfeit notes to be circulated so we see a lot of them. Most we catch but some will always manage to get through. Round pounds are very difficult to catch as we have machines that count the coins but they only check the weight of the coins not the look of them. If we are lucky you spot them on the way through the machine but many fall through unnoticed.

I have never been passed a counterfeit note in a personal situation - only in my work role. I think I would notice it!

Ahhhh...  That explains it.

My favorite scam regarding counterfeit US currency comes from the Philippines.  It seems (if you listen to the scammers) the US Government hid a considerable amount of currency in the caves of Mindinao in the form of Million Dollar Bills!

I got one of the scammers to send me pictures of the containers in which the notes came, but I've never been able to get pics of a purported note.

The best part was when I got a serious phone call from a senior banker in the UK asking about these notes.  He seemed quite relieved that he had done the right thing when I advised the US has never issued a Million Dollar note.  I guess they were offering him the notes at a "deep discount."

I work at a rare coin company, so I get all sorts of fun questions.

BTW - it is my understanding that British Pounds never expire.  If you have an older note, say from the 1980s, that has been superseded, can you just spend it or do you have to go to the Bank of England to redeem them?

I sort of have this pile here.....

I don't collect notes, but I'm willing to help you. I'll pay face value for any genuine, crisp uncirculated George V notes you have from the UK. To be a pal, I'll even pay for shipping. ::peace::
