I have always been fascinated by the art of glass blowing and was wondering if anyone else has watched anything like this at fairs and carnival's. In the spring there is an event in Portsmouth that inspires me.

Dear friend,

I'm a glass artist  of some 40+ years.  I taught glass  classes at our local art gallery  and at the  high school(the only school in this part of the world that has a brand new glass studio) .

Teaching at the local school is fun because the studentry learns the importance of Mathmatics, physics and chemistry. Glass is fun because everyone love to play with fire.

I would end up messing it up then trying to fix it with my fingers, then toss it, probably hitting someone with melted glass. A person would have to be fast and confident. How hot does it have to be and does different glass react differently to the pulling and pushing and stretching?

Glass is a wonderful substance to work with. Different kinds of glass work or change state at different temps. Most glass is a solid and maintains it's color up to 1000F-1200F.  Most people can burn themselves at or below this temp because it looks just like any other piece of cold glass. Some kinds of glass start to soften at higher temps. Most glass has to be 1400F-1600F before it's soft enough to work. 2000F-2300F is a good working range. Because glass works best at the consistency of honey. So, I have my student get a jar of honey and try to make a ball on the end of a stick without it dripping on the floor and then transfer the honey to another stick.

If they can do this (because it works like hot glass without getting burned) then they can go on to working Hot glass. Working glass is like a dance or the martial arts. If ya can't dance you might get hurt or hurt someone else.

One does not have to be fast, but one does have to learn a lot about science, movement, creativity and more.
