I have always been interested in this but have never tried. I recently went to an auction and was tempted to buy an old setup that was up for bid. After thinking a bit I decided to get a book on it. Any tips?

I have no tips, just want to say that a few years back I had considered it also.  I may still do that.  I've always had an interest in it.

I wanna get into this too. I did reading a while back and to get your license there are local clubs that help with plenty of info.

Umm....

YES!

KA4LFP - General Class operator, first licensed in 1978.

I've been in amateur radio since I was 14. (which means I've now been a ham for 30 years)

There is now NOT a code requirement - though learning Morse is a LOT easier than you think.

My "Elmer" (guy who got me started) could teach ANYONE to "copy" Morse code at 5wpm in FIVE HOURS...
absolutely guaranteed! I saw him do that with over 50 people, and every single one passed who tried the exam shortly after finishing the 5 hours with him.

Questions?

Amateur radio ops are some of the neatest people around, if you find the old guys who KNOW communications.
There are a lot of "regular" people as well, who are usually nice.

But what I've always loved about it is the meeting place of people who KNOW things.

One of my many neat experiences was talking to the hams onboard Mir as they went overhead, and same for several of the shuttles. That's done with just a regular 2-meter radio and a decent antenna.

Hams work in many many areas of communications-- I've talked to radio operators on Navy ships around the world, at both of the Poles, on over 100 differnt countries, and also spoken once with (the late) King Hussein of Jordan,  who was a ham)

I've helped out with international emergency efforts from hurricanes to earthquakes to flooding in the central US.
(via providing communications for the Red Cross, a very common amateur activity)

Though I've not talked "through" them, hams have several of their own hand-built satellites up and orbiting (we built the communications gear on the first one, too!)

But what's probably the MOST fun is getting a child to the microphone with a map, and having them talk to a ham on another continent, or someplace like Easter Island.
Skype/voip is changing that some, but there is still a thrill of hearing that voice and knowing that NOTHING is connecting the two of you other than radiowaves-- not miles of cabling and technology owned by other poeple.

hey!

You're a NATURAL!!!

You probably already know about it but -

http://www.ares.org/groups/mars/index.htm

You would likely find it VERY easy to get a Tech class license without half trying.

Thanks I will have to look into it. I have a Panasonic 23 channel tranceiver that I could get up and running, plenty of cable and a 24' pole that I could attach an antenna to. ground it with a good copper rod maybe 20' away from the house. That would get me started. I never knew that there was a licensing body and will check it out . The setup at the auction looked a bit daunting. Thanks for the linc. It certainly gives me something to think about.  I mostly worked with a teletype in the service.

well,  I sent you the link to ARES out of interests sake..

http://www.arrl.org is where you'd go to find licensing info.

They will have a listing of clubs in your area

http://www.sover.net/~ranv/weekend.html

I don't know how close you are to Manchester, but the link above is for classes there.

Tim, don't you have to get a license and pass a test in order to be able to talk (send) on a ham radio?

I would think it would be an ideal tool for you to get first-hand unbiased media info from around the globe. What do you mean "to slow"  sometimes I like things slow myself after dealing in the fast lane all day............

Yes you do - but the Technician exam is now _very very_ easy to pass..

No Morse code required for any level of license any longer.

Most people pass Technician class in about a week or so with some light studying and a weekend class with hams who are instructors.

And the equipment ranges from $50-100 for smaller used radios to about $500 for a good used larger radio.

I've never paid more than $550 for a "rig" myself. Always had radios about 5-8 years old, worked fine, did everything I was doing.
And I've done both VHF (local in your car radio) and HF/DX - working from home talking around the planet (literally- I've talked to over 100 countries, many ships, the Space Station (both Skylab and ISS) and MIR, and a couple of the shuttles)

Cool, thanks. I want to get one as an alternative backup form of communication one day.
