Any Colt 1911A1 collectors or gun collectors know where I can research the serial number from this 1911A1 .45ACP I have.  It's in excellent condition and has all the original packaging.  I would like to find out what it's worth and maybe it's history.

thanks!

Ok, it looks like it was 1942 not 1914.

A World War II manufactured Colt 1911 A1, if manufactured by Colt would be worth upwards of $1200 - $1500 in excellent condition.

The original kraft box would probably add another $500 on to the value depending on the exact nature of the packaging.

Remington - Rand, Ithaca, and Union Switch & Signal also made 1911-A1s in the US during the war.

Remington - Rands are the most common, but one as you have described would be worth over $1000 easily.

Ithaca and Union Switch & Signal are fairly rare if not arsenal rebuilt.

The rarest 1911-A1s were made in Canada, IIRC.  There were 100 or fewer made.

This should be able to help with date of manufacture:

BTW - prices for US military firearms have been rising strongly in the past few years.

I googled the 9th service command and found this link.

http://www.uen.org/utahlink/tours/tourImage.cgi?image_id=24561&tour_id=14826

It reminds me of the movie 1942 with Dan Akroyd, and John Belushi.  This gun most likely never saw combat.

I must have given you what's called the Springfield Research Service link.

Did you get an exact match?

If so, that might increase the value.

Try these links for manufacture dates:

http://www.m1911.org/dates.htm

http://www.sightm1911.com/1911Production.htm

They may help.  They have me filtered at work, so I can't tell for sure.

BTW - a lot of stuff didn't get overseas.  Some was kept in the States for internal security and training.  It doesn't diminish the value though.

I will photograph the packaging after lunch.  Should the barrel have a matching Serial Number?  This barrel has no SN , it only has the letter S stamped behind the link assembly and the words COLT 45 AUTO stamped on the side.

Your pistol should be marked like the one on this website:

http://site.voila.fr/collectionarme/colt1911a1.htm

US Military arms only have a serial number on the frame.  Any other numbers are either assembly numbers or proofing codes.

The S mark on the barrel is probably a proofmark.

Unfortunately I can not take pics because I no longer have possesion of the gun.::cryer::

After field stripping it I noted that it was not well taken care of.  The original owner wanted more money than I was willing to pay, we disagreed on a lot of things, so he took it back and now it's gone.  I think $2000 was way too much.

I counted my chickens too soon.:verymad::bang9:
