Stev32k-Cool coin-What is it?

I used to collect as a kid as it was either buy coins or put money in the bank from X-Mas/B-Day money. I have a worthwhile collection stored away somewhere.

How do you know if a coin has been AT or toned or whatever the term is.  I see many coins with rainbow colors and I would think this can be replicated easily with chemicals or heat. Correct ??

A coin doctor can always splash some color on a coin, but it's hard to get it to turn out right. It's easy to learn the basics of telling artificial toning from natural toning if you have a knowledgable teacher and the chance to look at some coins together. I believe that with practice one can easily classify most coins into AT or NT, but there will always remain a few that one will be uncertain about.

The basic idea for spotting artificial rainbow toning on silver coins is that the colors always appear in the same order naturally--gold-magenta-blue. That three color pattern can repeat. Also on NT coins, the toning is often interrupted by the devices. Uniform color across fields and devices should be a warning sign that the coin may be questionable.

Now, there are exceptions to the rule, and it's impossible to learn how to do it from a written description. Nevertheless because I am a fool I provide it so you'll know what people may be looking at when they attempt to differentiate between AT and NT.

Thank You for well informed response. I have been thinking of collecting coins again for my two young boys and I think they would like the color variations at their current ages and I am aware of all the fraud in card collecting and dont want to succumb to that in coins. Thanks-Donovan:cool:

I like coins too, and my older brother helped me catch the disease when I was 5 years old.

Great Fugio Cent there, Steve!!

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

Yes, I do.

U.S. 1, 5, 10 and 25 Cent coins from circulation since the early 60's.

World coins (mostly minors) since 1995 with my daughter.

And any 1965 Washington Quarters I receive in change.

sjbrian, I see you are interested in German Marks, is this paper or coins? I have this coin, but I am sure you already have on in your collection. Just bringing it forward in case you may be looking for one.
