Pit Bull attacks 69-year-old woman: Pet dog killed By Cory Frolik The Daily Times Article Launched: 07/18/2007 12:00:00 AM MDT

FARMINGTON — Thirty-seven-year-old Rene Rodriguez was getting ready for work early Tuesday morning when the incessant barking of his two dogs made him glance out the window. That is when he saw what all the commotion was about: A pit bull was attacking two dachshunds and an elderly woman in front of his neighbor's Farmington home.
Rushing outside, he grabbed the pit bull, which he described as a red and white dog weighing about 50 pounds, by a harness it was wearing and restrained it.

"I couldn't tell who it was biting. When I saw it, it was on top of the lady. I ran straight out of the house and pulled the dog off her. When I pulled the dog away, it had a Wiener dog in its mouth," Rodriguez said.

The incident occurred on 17th Street, near the Fairview Avenue intersection.
The woman, 69-year-old Elaine Berkey, lives on the 2200 block of North Schofield Lane and likes to walk her two 6-year-old dachshunds to or past her daughter's house, on the corner of 16th and Fairview.

Early Tuesday morning, Berkey saidshe had her dachshunds, "Little Guy" and "Bogie," on short leashes and they were nearing Fairview when she spotted the pit bull. At first, the dog gave no sign that it intended to harm Berkey or her furry companions. The dog trotted up to her without showing any kind of aggression.

But once it got to her, it got mean. The pit bull started biting her dogs with a ferocity that suggested to Berkey right away that its intention was to kill them.

"He was biting me too sometimes. But his main goal was killing those dogs," she said.
Berkey said she cried out for help for 10 minutes or so, with no results. She kept trying to hold the dog's mouth to keep it from sinking its teeth into her pets. She wasn't able to get off the ground until Rodriguez came sprinting to her aid.

Covered in blood, Berkey scooped up Little Guy in her arms and carried him and escorted the limping Bogie away from the scene. Rodriguez said he was too busy restraining the pit bull to get Berkey's name and said he couldn't tell if the blood belonged to her or to her dogs.

Meanwhile, a motorist driving down 17th Street stopped after seeing the blood-splattered Berkey. After talking with Rodriguez the passer-by called 911. According to Rodriguez, the motorist was told by 911 dispatch that police did not respond to such incidents, only animal control handled these cases.

Animal control received the call from dispatch at 7:48 a.m., said Farmington Animal Control Officer Virginia Jim. The pit bull was loaded into the truck of a control officer less than 10 minutes later.

As for Berkey, she had fled the scene in a hurry, anxious to get to her daughter's home where she got a ride to the vet and then her family doctor's office.

Little Guy was dead by the time Berkey arrived at the vet's. There is no doubt in Berkey's mind that Bogie would be dead, too, if Rodriguez had not intervened.

At the doctor's office, Berkey received bandages and antibiotics for her wounds.
After the attack, Rodriguez said he became upset that emergency dispatch did not properly handle the calls for the assistance. Rodriguez felt as though police or EMTs should have shown up to the scene, which he said never happened.

"It's like nobody wanted to help this woman — an elderly woman, just walking her dog. It's like nobody cared," he said. "I just wish that police would have done something or dispatch would have gotten somebody out there. This just isn't right. I thought they were there to help us."
After being told that a unit was being sent out, Rodriguez said he waited at his home for a while before he grew impatient and called 911 again.

"I asked dispatch if animal control officers were EMTs because I told them again that this lady was covered in blood and was hurt," he said.

Berkey's husband, 70-year-old Roland Berkey, said he was somewhat upset that there was not more urgency to the response. But he had more sympathy than Rodriguez.

"I think that the police just failed to respond to a potentially serious injury," he said. "And yet, I am understanding that once they were called, the emergency was over."

Berkey herself said it did bother her that no one was sent out to look for her, but what bothered her more was that a large, mean pit bull was on the loose at all.
She couldn't believe someone could let such an aggressive creature off its leash.

San Juan County Communications Authority Director Daryl Branson said the protocol for handling dog bite calls depends on the nature of the incident.
"If it's an animal versus a human, an ambulance is needed. ... If it's an active attack, police are (dispatched)," he said.

After reviewing the 911 tapes from Tuesday morning, Branson said the first call to 911 did not indicate a person was attacked. Rodriguez likely did not know this, he said.
The other two calls, both made by Rodriguez, did mention Berkey and her injuries, but by that point, she was long gone and dispatch had nowhere to send the units, Branson said.

"To be honest, I wish this call had gone differently," Branson said. "My feeling is that we could have done more to locate the female from the second call."

In all events, Berkey said she is more shocked than angry.
"I am sure I am going to have nightmares about this. ... I have walked with dogs for 40 years and I have never had anything like this happen before. I enjoyed walking, but I don't know if I'll be ever able to walk again," she said.

The owner of the pit bull was not identified by Tuesday night. If the owner is not found, after 10 days the pit bull will be destroyed.

Saint writes: I'm getting pretty sick of this kind of thing, so I wrote a letter to the editor:
Dear Editor:

Once again, a member of our community has been attacked by a Pit Bull. Like all breeds, the Pit bull has been genetically manipulated by man.  In this case, instead of being bred for rescue like the St. Bernard, or herding, like the Australian Shepherd, Pit Bulls have been genetically manipulated for aggression and fighting in the "Pit."

That might have been fine in an earlier day, when dog fighting was still legal, but this is a new century and there is no place anymore for vicious pit fighters. Its former use is gone, but the breed and it's dangerous genes are still around. Now, however, is has been taken out of the pit and into the family room and yard. That's a recipe for disaster and we are seeing the consequences.

Some may argue that there are "nice" pit bulls and that's its the fault of the owner when a dog goes bad and attacks a person. I'm not buying it.  I thought the tigers in the cage with Roy were nice and so did he, until the genes took over and he ended up crippled. You can't overcome genetics and instinct with training. That's the reason we don't allow people to have tigers in their yards.

A Pit Bull is a dangerous animal.  It can kill or maim a human being and is well-known for violent behavior. It's time for our little city to follow in the footsteps of other far-thinking communities and ban the breed forever. A general amnesty should be given to owners of the dogs that are currently alive, but no further pups should be allowed to be bred or sold in our town. When the last of these man-made monsters ages and dies, we can all breathe a sigh of relief that none of our mothers, grandmothers, or children will ever suffer a horrifying fate like that again.

Sincerely,

(Saint's name)

You know I fight legislator after legislator to stop ignorant laws by ignorant people about subjects they know nothing about first hand.

Sorry Saint, you are totally wrong on this one. You go off and in one fell swoop discredit a whole breed because some people do despicable things with it or are too stupid to properly take care of them, train them or even keep them on a leash.

First it was Dobermans, then Rottwiellers, German Shepherds, Akitas and the like. People fear things they don't understand.

Many people get specific breeds of dogs because they are 'fashionable' at the time. Remember the dalmation explosion when 101 Dalmations was remade?

I have pit bull terriers. I know many people with pit bulls. These dogs ARE NOT for everyone. They take special handling and care and should not be 'backyard bred'. They are kind, loving and wonderful dogs but people forget one thing, they are TERRIERS. All terriers are what the layperson would call 'nasty little curs with a bad attitude'. The difference is this breed is bigger, more muscular and all the other terrier characteristics are a bit more exaggerated.
The plus side is they are highly intelligent, willing to learn, more loyal and family oriented than any other breed I've had experience with.

Now you throw in stupid people having them. Those who buy them for popularity's sake.  Ghetto thugs, rappers, pigs like Michael Vicks (who is now indicted in one of the most horrible pit bull fighting rings ever), and lots and lots of other undesirables who breed these dogs willy nilly for fighting. Some keep them to give themselves the balls they lack as a man. They want to look like tough guys and what better way than with a pit? These types have  no business owning such a dog.

They don't do anything about keeping bloodlines, they breed for viciousness. They give dogs away to friends who want cute puppies. These 'friends' think they are going to make money on puppies too. So they breed.... indiscriminately.

Then you add in these morons don't bother with the basics like training, proper socialization, vet check ups even, vaccinations, LOVE, and proper basic care and you have a recipe for disaster.

Dogs just don't snap for no reason. They just don't. Someone somewhere did something to not give the dog all of the above.

Top it off, something triggers 99% of these attacks. No one ever goes to the trouble to find out what it is. Why? because it's a pit bull  so it has to be the dogs fault 100%. More sensationalism for the story.

I shouldn't have to suffer because the ignorant are out there doing stupid stuff. There should be some kind of restriction on who should have these dogs but it's a difficult thing to sort out. It can be done. I 've offered my knowledge for free when I recently helped get breed specific legislation shot down here. You can't make laws out of fear and ignorance. My voluntary offer was rejected because Mims Hackett of NJ didn't have the nerve to do the right thing when his argument for this legislation wasnt' valid.

The state senate vetoed his bill by a landslide. I have personal cell #'s to a couple state senators who will personally help me keep this kind of ignorant legislation from becoming law if it ever comes up again. They will also consider pushing my ideas to help if it ever comes up again.

I follow the rules, I train my dogs, my dogs are properly cared for, socialized and kept on leashes. They do NOT run around the neighborhood unattended. I have also taken many abused dogs and pits among them that I have rehabilitated from horrible vicious beasts to loving family dogs. It can be done.

Look at Caesar Millan. His pack of dogs are lovely. He took the time to train them. They can be trusted 100%. If I had the money, I'd go to California and study under him to perfect my abilities with all kinds of dogs.

Why were these dogs off leash? Who did they belong to? I can tell you right now that they attacked because they were behaving in a territorial mannor. They should have been on a leash, with their owner. NOT running loose in the street. They showed typical pack mentality where they thought they were the alpha dogs.

This is insanity at its very best! The police don't respond in an emergency situation? Someone is being attacked and they don't respond? That right there is a crime in itself and the town and police should be ASHAMED of themselves.

Like I said these kinds of dogs are not for everyone but making them illegal to have and wiping out a whole wonderful breed of dogs because of the few who make the news is totally wrong. What else do you want the government to tell me what I can and cannot have?

Now, pit bulls were not originally bred to fight to the death, they were bred to to bait bulls. By this they would grab the nose of a bull and subdue the bull. Then it evolved to fighting dogs. The dogs did not fight to the death but were supposed to fight until one dog goes to submission, much like the Borzoi hunt wolves.
Never to the death.

MAN has taken a dog fighting - despicable as it is anyway, then and now - to a whole new level of evil and what's the first thing people do? Blame the dogs. Try blaming the humans. The dogs didn't do this to themselves. Trust me, they would rather be loved than in a dog ring fighting.

Do you know that it's against the law to fight dogs of any kind in all 50 states? It's a federal crime in all but 2 - Idaho and Wyoming. Both of those states refuse to sign onto Jessica's Law as well. Why ban dog fighting when you wont' even protect children?

Yes it's awful these dogs attack, but I'm sorry, you cannot fault the animal when it's owned by someone who made it like it is. Go after the ignorant, stupid, sadistic, evil and selfish owners who do things like this or the moron who gets a dog he cannot handle.

And as for comparing keeping tigers to keeping dogs. Sorry, wild animals are not PETS. Roy knew exactly what he was getting into when he kept tigers. You cannot compare wild animals to domestic pets. There's a huge difference. I've worked with the Philadelphia zoo on a subcontractor level with construction work and got to know the curator there. I've had the first hand experience with zoo kept wild animals, and I've also done my fair share of wild animal rescue here in NJ with rehab and release.
There's a HUGE difference in behavior between the two. Can't compare.

i have such mixed feelings about this. i remember the presa canarios case in CA. yes it's the owners. and yes it's the nature of the breed. do we license owners rather than dogs?

They are a Dog breed that as Twitchin put it a Terrier. Yes they require devoted owners and shouldn't be left to their own devices.

I'm not sure I would put them with young children. If they get angry their bit is deadly since they lock their jaws and don't let go, which is like no other breed.

I had 2 full grown Dobermans that were not comfortable when a friend would bring his Pit Bull over. They just didn't trust the dog as it was alway going for their throats.

All dogs can be dangerous under the right conditions. Pit Bulls are agressive and if there is more than one there can be trouble when you least expect it.

Of course its the owner that should pay attention as with any dog they require supervision.

I am so sick of this small-minded, uneducated, ignorant stupidity that we see all the time about these dogs.  Where is the outcry and screaming to ban cars that kill hundreds of thousands of more people than ANY dog ever has?  When are people going to scream for banning backyard pools that kill hundreds of children a year?  Let's ban stupid sports like mountain climbing, and ice hockey.  Hell, lets just ban ice skating altogether.  Actually, let's ban people from hunting.  People kill more animals a year than any dog.   I myself have killed more animals than any pit bull ever has.

Here's the best idea yet:  Let's just ban stupid people.

Even many Pit Bull owners admit that they would not leave their children alone in a room with a Pit Bull because of safety fears.

Any animal that cannot be left alone in a room with a child because of concern for that childs safety is NOT a suitable household pet, I don't care what anybody says.

Pit Bulls were bred to fight and are genetically predisposed to be aggressive, even with selective breeding this genetic aggressiveness is still prevelant. Most of the Pit Bull attacks in Britain have been by "family pets" who had no history of aggressive or violent behaviour, they just go "Pit Bull", and if they go "Pit Bull" even for a few seconds the consequences as we have seen can be deadly.

Similar to the Tiger going "Tiger" on Siegfried  and Roy. If people want to keep them as pets so be it, they should be muzzled in public at all times though.

Part of the problem is that Pit Bulls grab on to a degree and with a power that outdoes most other dogs.  So if they do turn, get pissed, or whatever, it is that much more worse.  In other words, they are inherently more dangerous at least due to the unusual power of their bites.

  Well put UTR!

I should rename this topic: "The ignorant speak out against pit bulls"

I'm sorry but their jaws DO NOT LOCK. I've had terriers all my life and they are ALL THE SAME when it comes to 'locking the jaws'. They don't.

Sorry, I can't agree about muzzling a dog in public too. You only MAKE an angry dog like that.

People who are SMART enough to not have their dog whatever breed it is with children unsupervised are not doing so because they don't trust the dog, they do so because they know the child is likely to put a finger in the dogs eye or stick something in it's ear and get bit.

Yes pit bulls have strong jaws but there are many other breeds out there that have the same.

I cannot tell you how many different breeds of dogs that I had to find new homes for because the owner's kids were getting bit. Not one a pit. Why were the kids getting bit? Owner STUPIDITY!. They refused to understand that the child cannot be PLAYING with the dog food with the dog trying to eat.
This goes on often.

Pit bulls don't "just go pit bull" and attack children. No one bothers to investigate to see what the child did to the dog. 99% of owners expect the dog to understand that it is a child molesting them when instead they should be teaching the CHILD RESPECT for the animal. This goes for EVERY species of animal on the planet.

They are not ALL bred to fight. There are more good dogs bred of this breed than those bred to fight ,but like I said ( obviously someone skimmed what i wrote and not fully read) the reports of the bad are always there to make better news stories.

The most dangerous dog out there is actually the wolf/dog hybrid. Do you know that keeping a pure wolf is 100% safer than a hybrid?

For every 'bad' thing you hear about there are 10x's more good stories to tell. Sensationalization of this is good fodder for the news and that's all it is.

Here's a vicious pit bull story for you:

My bf was married and in Detroit some years ago. He had a pit, Spike. Spike went to every family gathering. Spike was trained. Spike was inside playing with the kids. Matt's 3 year old niece comes in screaming like nuts with blood ALL OVER her face.

Uncle panicks, screaming how he didn't trust 'that dog', my poor daughter blah, blah, blah.
Everyone is running to see the 'carnage' and guess what? Spike is sitting there, right where Matt told him to STAY and missing half HIS EAR.

The girl child bit off the dogs ear! The horrible insane snap for no good reason pit bull was sitting there in excruciating pain waiting for the command from Matt to say it's OK to move.

I can tell you more stories about these kinds of incidences as you can tell of the other.

Ignorance gets you nowhere.

We need to regulate ignorant people and those who can only see one side of things.

Do statements like that raise your ire? It should. Because it's just as stupid and as saying we should ban something because we fear it.

Tell that to the poor little grandmother. I'm sure that will make her feel better about her mutilation.

I'm sick of the ignorant, closed-minded, couldn't-give-a-damn-about-others, selfish, self-centered, foolish, stupid cretins that insist upon owning dangerous, deadly animals despite the maiming, murder, and mayhem to human lives.

If it's a choice between banning these violent-bred monsters and losing another single child's life...

I'd choose banning every time.

But that's just me. I care more about people than animals.

OMG I can't believe I made it home without incident!

You see I took my pit bull, Daisy to the vet today for her 6 week follow up on her surgery. You should have seen the carnage!

We got there after she went nuts and ate the whole inside of my truck, then started gnawing on my head while I was driving. I got there all bloody and maimed but managed to bring her inside anyway.,

Inside the door there was a person cleaning it, so Daisy just had to chomp off a chunk of her leg. Why? Well you know how it goes, once they taste blood and all, they are rabid for it now forever and ever.

Then we got inside and there was thig gigantic German Shepherd. Well Daisy would have none of this! So she attacked this dog that is three times her size, went right for the throat.

Well once she was done with that, remember, i'm still holding my bloody brains in my hand here, we got to reception and signed in. Luckily without incidence.

We sat for awhile in the corner while she amused herself with the child's leg that she just attacked on the way to the seat in the waiting room when we finally were called in.

Let's just say the doctor touched her leg to examine it and got a face full of pit bull teeth. He'll need reconstructive surgery now.

It's a wonder I was able to lose the cops on the way home!

Owner stupidity.  Always.  People want to blame an entire breed for these things, and who they should be looking at are the owners.  People who do not "speak dog" or understand proper training techniques shouldn't own many types of dogs.  When I was doing obedience/behavioral training as a job; going into people's homes and showing them the right way to teach their dogs, the owners were amazed at how they could communicate correct actions to their pets.

My dog Bogey, whose story is in this forum, is part pit bull.  She was accepted for training by Leader Dogs for the Blind, which in itself is an accomplishment, and is now working as a customs agent.  So now we've got these "vicious, killer attacking-for-no-reason" dogs working as cops.  Weird, huh?

The comment comparing a pit to a tiger is completely absurd, and inaccurate.  As I said about that instance, you cannot love or train a wild animals natural instincts out of them.  A dog can be trained to be better behaved.  Too bad people can't be.  Anyone ever watch The Dog Whisperer?  Cesar Milan says it perfectly:  "I train people, I rehabilitate dogs."  If some owners would take the smallest clue from him, and see how he is able to "speak dog" instead of trying to talk to a dog as if it were a person, and attempt to train it as if it were a child, they might make some progress.

For every 'bad' thing you hear about there are 10x's more good stories to tell. Sensationalization of this is good fodder for the news and that's all it is.

Also true.  If it bleeds, it reads.  And people see what they want to see, and use stories like this to promote their own fear and justify their ignorance and stupidity.  If they bothered to even try, they could very easily find story after story of pit bulls living in homes with children and never even curl a lip at them.  But....people want to propegate the crap instead of learning FACTS.

And this whole argument is like politics or religion.  Those who think they have all the answers will never ever be taught what is true by the people who actually know what's true.  Just like no Democrat will ever admit he has learned something from a Republican, just as no Baha'i will ever admit to learning something from a Christian, those who fear pit bulls will never learn something from the professionals here who know what they are really all about.  And if they did learn something, they would never admit to it.  Thank you, I prefer to stay here in my ignorance, where I'm happy and sound like I'm right.

You forget we Homo Sapiens ARE animals.
