Today a friend of mine was telling me how she helped save a puppy's life yesterday. For the past week or two, the temps here in middle Tennessee have been in the high 90's and up. Well yesterday, my friend and her husband found a neighbor's puppy unconscious in their yard presumably from heat stroke. Being animal lovers and owners themselves, they took the puppy inside and brought it back to health. The part that sickened me was when she told me the puppy's owners reaction to their good deed. They were very snotty and unappreciative. They were unwilling to take the advice to take the puppy to vet for a checkup. My friend ultimately volunteered to take the puppy to the vet for them and pay for it, to which the owners declined and took the dog home with them. Needless to say, the proper authorities have been contacted regarding the matter.

I debated wether or not to post this. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how important it is to bring situations like this forward to not only praise the good deeds of some people but to also highlight the ill intentions of others. It just hurts my heart to think that there are people out there who will express a genuine interest in owning an animal, just to ignorantly put that animal in harms way. If you see or know someone who saw an animal being neglected, do the right thing and contact someone immediately. You'll be glad you did. ::nsmile::

Which "proper authorities" were contacted Smitty?  I'm asking because in my experience with things like this, just calling the local PD doesn't do much good.  You have to go through animal control, and the ASPCA.  The ASPCA knows the hoops to jump through and can get results quicker and easier than what the beat cops will bother doing.  If you would, tell your friend there's one person here who would shake their hand for stepping in and doing what they could to help the pup.

I'm glad you posted that, smitty.  I'm glad your friend tried to help.  I agree that some people just shouldn't be allowed to own an animal.  People should have to take a course in animal care before being allowed to own one.  Just my opinion.

A few years ago a former neighbor had a dog who he would often leave tied outside with no place to go for shade, and no water bowl.

I brought it to the attention of another neighbor, who was an animal control officer.  He said he had noticed and was going to approach the owner.  Not long after the owner gave the dog away.  So, maybe  it was good I did that.

It is my opinion that it was a good thing you did, Marie.  Hopefully the little one has a much better home now.

You're right UTR calling the police does little to nothing. Animal welfare was called. And I'll be sure to pass along that hand shake.

Good for you! You know i have actually 'stolen' many animals in this very same condition.

Horses, dogs, cats even a green iguana once.

People think any breed of dog can be kept outside and not worry about the weather conditions. They are wrong.

I would have not given the puppy back. Especially after I paid the vet bills. I would tell THEM  "go an call animal control while I steal your dog. in fact, i'll wait here till they come"!

Done that with a couple horses when I had my farm.

If anyone sees anyone causing harm to an animal - Make a phone call. It is the right thing to do.

Animals should be appreciated and not abused.
