As mine has come to a roadblock. My aunt's cat is acting strangely. She is older, about 9, spayed, fully vaccinated and has recently begun pooping in an area of the house where no litter box is available. Based on only this information, I told her to set up another box where the cat, Missy, is going and I would be over to look at her. I did this and got lucky enough to catch the cat in the box. Loose stool, though not diarrhea, and some pretty noisy farting going on. When I looked at what she feeds Missy, I found Science Diet i/d, prescribed by the vet, of course, mixed with some off-brand crap I've never heard of that is all cutesy colors and shapes, (really dumb, that stuff) both dry food, and she also feeds Fancy Feast as a "treat". I have told her to STOP with the Fancy Feast and mixing the i/d with other dry. Keep Missy just on the i/d and no treats. Whether my aunt will follow my instructions or not is anyone's guess as she is the type who anthropomorphizes and thinks the cat will "get mad" at her for denying the Fancy Feast and what not. What else can I suggest to her, as I suspect she won't follow the basic direction I have given her so far? She takes the cat to the vet when it needs to go and says she told the vet this problem, but I wasn't there to hear exactly what she told the Dr. I'm wracking my brain trying to recall what we did in situations like this at the clinic, but it's been 10 darn years since I've been in that line of work. So I figured a good place to come is here to ask!

In a 9 year old spayed female cat, I'd be doing a thyroid panel. Can cause the poops for sure, in addition to like you said, the "junk food". Even the Science Diet has stuff in it I don't like to see, but so be it. Innova Evo comes closest to not having "junk" in it.

Hey, sorry I missed this yesterday. I checked in a couple times but got real busy in the evenings. The problem is the food. Did you tell your aunt that the vet prescribed the special food for a reason? Reason being the cat cannot digest the stuff in commercial foods. I bet the poop stinks to high heaven too. And the gas! Cats normally do NOT fart. Their diets should be high in meat and fat and low on grains and veggies. Your aunt probably won't listen to you. Call her vet yourself, tell him the situation and see what he says. Ask if the cat can eat a raw or home made diet instead. If yes, go to the topic here or my site and look for the useful links box on the right. THis fourm has a useful links sticky. I think the link is 'what's really in pet food' or something like that. There is info in there on making a homemade diet for your cat or dog. If the cat can have home made food, then all she would do is give the cat vitamins as an extra as cats need TAURINE and other things they get from hunting and eating game outside. Your aunt may like cooking for kitty better as it makes her feel good to 'spoil' the cat. At least this way she can spoil it in a healthy way!

Hey, sorry I missed this yesterday. I checked in a couple times but got real busy in the evenings. No problem, TK, I know you get busy, and I knew you'd get to it eventually. Did you tell your aunt that the vet prescribed the special food for a reason? Sure did. But I'm just the little kid she used to babysit, not someone who knows what the hell she's talking about.
High heaven? It smells like I'm walking around Detroit when I get near the litter box. And the farting!! I know!!! Poor Missy has a yucky tummy and an owner who doesn't know what she's doing. My aunt is the type that would put clothes on the poor animal if she could. I'm going to print out this stuff and the info in your other links and take it to her, as possibly something in writing that doesn't come from my mouth will have an effect. And I will call the vet myself on Tuesday after the holiday. Good thinkin' TK. Thank you for the help and I'll fill you in on what happens.

newbiecollector wrote: http://www.cat-pregnancy-report.com/cat-illness-symptoms.html Newbie, anything I can send her to can help. Just coming from me, even though I am experienced, doesn't mean a whole lot to her. If I can deluge her with info that doesn't come from my mouth, she may wake up and realize she has to do something. Thank you! I'll send this along to her.

One thing I forgot. The cat is pooping outside it's litter box because it does not feel well. Cats will let you know it's ill by acting out of the norm. So cats that go potty outside its' box or what would look like in a spiteful place, is simply the cat trying to get your attention to see the problem faster. Cats are not usually spiteful creatures like dogs can be. The only time I've seen spiteful cat behavior is in multi cat households where the cats did not get along with each other and constantly fought. The urinating and defecating would be all over because of several factors: Territory marking... spraying from both male and female Scratching all sorts of things, walls, furniture, wood railings, walls, anything> cats scratch to mark territory as well. Nerves. Nervous cats will go in a place they feel safe. Boxes that are kept in places where a cat does not feel secure, and in private will cause a well cat to go outside the box. Examples are: Laundry rooms Bathrooms Places of high traffic Boxes with closed lids Boxes that are not deep or big enough Litter preferences > some cats are very picky about the texture of the litter. I am using that littermaid automatic box. My cats all took to it right away except for one. Thing 2. She's an odd little cat and very cautious as it is. She got the unfortunate experience of going in the box right behind another cat before the rake cleaned cat 1's business. She was peeing and the motor (which is quite loud) totally freaked her out. I had to get her used to it slowly all over again. Now they all wait for the rake to go and they all take turns beating the snot out of it. But then again, I have very unusual cats. They don't act like normal cats in the way of reclusiveness, they are not aloof and they accept change very easily. They all also get along except for the two sisters. Thing 1 and Thing2 both used to love each other until they got spayed. I found male cats to be more laid back and easy going than females. So you might want to have your aunt consider where and the atmosphere of the box too. Upset cats due to nerves like that will have upset stomachs as well. Get to my site and forum, there is a wealth of info in the Health section too. I think you don't have to join to read that area. Do not let your aunt give the cat medicing, especially Kaopectate! They changed the forumula and it is not good to give. Most contain aspirin anyway. Another thing... medications. Is this cat on any meds? Did they change if she is? If she got a generic from a different company making generics, that could cause problems too. The 'fillers' in generics vary from company to company and can cause problems. I know they do with me and I had problems with generic from the vet with my old cat. I thought he was going to die! Check the cat section in the health area for somethign titled about Smitty and loose poop or something.

The cat is pooping outside it's litter box because it does not feel well. Cats will let you know it's ill by acting out of the norm. This is what I told her!!! I said it's not like the cat is a person, as she seems to think, and it can say, "Hey, my tummy feels funky". I thought of the location, too. Missy has been going in that box for a long time, and never had a problem before. A clean box was one of my questions, too. But Aunt cleans out the litter every single time Missy goes, if she's home, so that wasn't an issue.
I don't trust her not to really over medicate, so I didn't breathe a word about over the counter stuff. Nope. Also another question I asked. I will be checking out your site and printing out some stuff to pass on to her. Like I said, if it comes from someone other than me, it may hold more water and she may pay attention. Thanks so much for the help, TK!!
