This is so wrong. My local paper today had an ad for these guys... at

500 bucks per.

Don't waste your money, people. Save a life, adopt a shelter pet, you'll

be glad you did.

I can think of a few new ways to use that acronym of ACHC in the ad, but there's no cussing in the pets forum. ::devilangry::   These designer "breeds" are NOT breeds recognized by the AKC or by serious breeders interested in promoting the standards of actual breeds.  They are a gimmick, and the last thing we need is yet another "fad" in the serious responsibility of pet ownership.  These dogs are MUTTS.  Nothing more.  If you spend these absurd amounts of money on these things just because you're fool enough to fall for the "breed" use in the catch-phrase "designer breeds" you are promoting the already overwhelming overpopulation of dogs across the country.

At the shelter where Erinna got her new kitty today, we learned that they get 180 animals A DAY brought in.  Someone has got to do something about these people who have no more interest in dogs than making a buck.  :censored:  :bang9: ::down::

180 animals A DAY going into the shelters is a staggering statistic! It's highly unlikely that there will ever be a time when adoptions will ever match that! The matter must be dealt with at the beginning, not after. How could such a thing be accomplished, by training pet owners to not let their pets breed!? Seems drastic times, requires drastic measures! Or is the problem really that these are feral dogs & cats out on their own, doing what come naturally? It's tough nut to crack!!! ::chuckle::

Cars, that is 180 a day, just in my county!  When you adopt from a shelter, they require a deposit to have the animal neutered, which you get back once you bring in proof the surgery is done.  When you buy from a breeder, some of them do the same, but not all.  When you buy from a pet store, (which could be more accurately described as buying from a puppy mill in most cases) they don't give a damn what you do with the dog once you have it.

Strays are part of the problem, yes.  But there wouldn't be so many strays if the owners and breeders did what they should do and prevented the litters from being born in the first place.

:good::iagree:

It is sad to think how many unwanted animals there are out there.  Especially if the animal (especially dogs) is a mutt (and I do not mean the designer ones) and not perfect looking.

I like watching the dog shows on TV (so sue me) and looking at some of the pure breeds..I have to ask myself why someone would want to own one of those.

If I ever get a cat again, it will definatly be a rescue.  And the cat will be an indoor cat..and fixed.

Too freakin' close.  I am 6 miles outside the city limits.  I can smell the s**thole city as I type.

If you watch Animal Cops Detroit you know it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to own a pit bull.  We have one of the largest pit bull fighting rings in the nation.  In this "wonderful" city, pit bulls that are brought in to the ASPCA are not rehabilitated, they are euthanized.  Fortunately, that is not the case in every city out there.  Too bad we can't get Cesar Milan to come here and rehabilitate all the pit bulls the ASPCA gets!

Aren't pit bulls banned in Florida?  A guy down the street has two of them.  When he takes them for a walk he says they are tame..and they do seem so.  I do not mean to have any prejudice against pits, but I don't like getting too close.  OK...yep, I am the kid who was bit badly by a dog for no apparent reason except I was walking by.

I don't think they are, Marie.  Check the link.

I was bitten by a dog when I was young, too.  A dog I knew, and I was chased by one when I was about 7.  The dog had got loose from its yard and just wanted to play, but my Dad football-kicked it over the porch railing anyway. All he knew was I was screaming and he came out to a big doberman on my heels.  The dog was ok, thankfully, but even those things didn't deter me from loving dogs and wanting to work with them.  Any and all breeds.  I love 'em all!

Heck, when I used to work in animal medicine I'd get bit once in a while.  It goes with the territory.

OK, May be Miami.  I seem to remember on Animal Cops Miami they talked about "illegal pit bull ownership" in the county.

As for dogs..I am actually more leary if I do not know the dog, or the owner. But it is a healthy leariness.  If I am not sure of a dogs temprement I won't approach it.  I will usually ask the owner first if the dog minds being petted by a stranger.  Some are protective of their owners.

I was caring for a friends dog in my house for a few days once.  She was very attached to me. Rick was visiting at the time.  He went to give me a hug when he was leaving and the dog jumped right between us to push us apart. ::inlove::

Now see, that is the dog I would be leery of.  That is a dominance behavior and I'd have to nip that in the bud real quick.

Normally, UTR I would agree with you.  But this dog has a past with men.  She was seriously abused by the husband of her former owner. That is why the former owner gave her up {personally I would have dumped the guy, but that is me}.  She was always leary and skittish around men.  She never broke of that.

Being leery of men is still a behavior that can be corrected.  Pushing between you and Rick is absolutely a dominance behavior.  If she never "broke" of that, her owner caused the dog to remain afraid of men.  Dog psychology is something not many people understand, and the owner probably wasn't even aware she was propagating the behavior.
