I worked the desk tonight at the clinic, and answered an insanely ridiculous, staggeringly stupid, so-dense-it-makes-my-teeth-itch phone call.

A woman called, in a panic, saying she had recently had her dog treated for kidney stones, about a week ago.  When she went to the yard to bring him in, she picked him up, and blood "gushed and spurted" from his penis.  As Doc had gone home for the night and it is his wife's birthday, I told her she needed to get to the 24-hour clinic a few miles down the road.  She said.......I kid you not......."Huh?"  She actually said, "Huh?"  I repeated that Doc wasn't in and if her dog is spurting blood, she needs to get it to a veterinarian right away.  Now.  5 minutes ago.  Immediately.

Then......again, I kid you not....she asks if I can call the clinic and ask that doctor what she should do!!!!  I gritted my teeth, chomped down hard on my tongue, and said, "No ma'am; no phone calls, put your dog in the car and take it to the emergency clinic right NOW." 

Folks, we cannot diagnose anything over the phone.  Even Doc won't diagnose over the phone even if he knows instantly what is wrong by the description.  And if you're not so worried about what is going on that you ask a receptionist to call the clinic and ask the doctor at another hospital for [free] advice don't own a pet.

I don't know why this type of ignorance and stupidity even makes me bat an eyelash.

Cause you expect people to do the right thing by their pets.  I guess she wanted an easy answer or thing to do.  Lazy and dumb, maybe?

It also sounds like your employer is lucky to have you, since you don't play games with people and their pets.

If it was my dog, I would not have wasted time calling the vet..I would have gone to the after hours right away.  What was she thinking??

That poor dog, to be "owned" by such...

What really gets me is she's lucky enough to have an all hours clinic
close by, and doesn't think to just use it. Yeah, they're more expensive,
but so what?
