I read about this in my clinic and I have to wonder; short of finding the possibility of breeds in your mutt that are prone to specific illnesses, what is the point?  A dog which is part German Sheperd might be prone to hip dysplasia; and it might not.  A mutt with dachsund in it might be prone to back issues; and it might not.  A dog with pug in its bloodline might be prone to sinus or nasal issues; and it might not.

I know a bit about the markup in a veterinarian's office and I just don't know what to think of this idea.  It sounds a bit like one way for vets to make even more money than they do on what are already exorbitantly marked up prices - in my area, anyway.

It has been my experience that a mutt seems to retain the best traits of each breed it has in its bloodline.  Maybe I just got lucky with my mutts, and maybe there is something to that.

What do the other pet owners think of this?  TK or SP; have either of you heard of this before?

I'm with you UTR, crap- pure crap and another way to jack up prices and prey on the emotions of ignorant pet owners.

ALL breeds of animals are a crapshoot with genetics and ailments associated with specific breeds. All you can do is hope you got your pet from a reputable breeder and they are in breeding for the love of it and not to make money. Then hope all goes well.

There are always problems with ALL breeds, whether they are bred to be the best or not, and this goes for mutts too.

I have had purebreds and mutts and have problems with both. I don't think a mutt has any more resiliency than a pure bred animal or vice versa. There are many arguments on both sides of the theory and all this comes from supposed experience to negate the opposite.

So that tells me its the luck of the draw no matter what.
