My cat Callie has been heavily grooming specific areas of herself more than others, resulting in a thining of the area's coat. This started about 2-3 days ago. I did a google search and it said things like this are the result of stress or a dramatic change like surroundings, food or litter. The only one of these that has changed at all is her food. The same brand, I just changed the formula from 'healthy weight' to 'healthy weight & hairball' and she's had this formula before without incident so I doubt it's allergies. She's been treated for fleas. They don't appear to be sore or infected and she doesn't seem to be in pain because of them. So I'm curious what you guys think, what might be going on and how it might be treated at home. I have no qualms taking her to her vet and I will if I have to, I just don't want to jump to conclusions. Here are the pics.

Oh yea, she's strictly an indoor cat.

Her hind legs and underside VV (sorry about the kitty porn :D )

How old was she and when was her last vet check? The food change might still

be it since so many of them re-formulate without warning.

I'd probably suspect something like out of whack thyroid.

You didn't change things like brand of laundry detergent, oor fabric

softener? (This is if she sleeps on things you wear) It almost looks

like a stress thing but it's hard to imagine it got like that in three days.

I'd try keeping her occupied might relieve some stress. Interactive

play with string or whateve, get her circulation going.

I'd be very careful of topically applying anything you weren't sure

of 'cause kitties are small and if she ingests a lot of somwthing

through licking...

The belly photo looks like what my Chucky is going through the last couple months.

I chalked it up to fleas - thus treated or the change of weather.

But now you bring up Thyroid Sweet Pea and I think he needs a check.

He's lost weight and this is the Thyroid theory making sense to me.

He's healthy otherwise, active, no flaky skin etc.

Smitty, has your cat lost any weight?

My cat is up there in years, he came to me in '96, full grown, adult teeth so we can only guess his age within a couple of years.  So he can be anywhere from 12 to 15 + years old.

Its not been usual for my cats to lose massive amounts of hair upon summer coming though. Here it's winter for ages then suddenly it's 90° and 90% humidity. They practically explode this time of year!

Callie will be 8 in August and she was 6 the last time she saw a vet. No other changes were made around the house. Our weather change has been pretty sudden and that could be a factor I suppose. She has'nt lost any weight (I wish...she's a big girl). She's not a very active cat, never really was all that active but even less in recent years so bordom could be getting to her. Get's bored with toys easily anymore. She has always shed quite a bit anyways but this is the first time I've seen bare or thin spots. I think it's time to schedule her for a vet visit and a trip to Petsmart for some new gadgets to get her up and playing around just to cover my bases. Good luck with Chucky. :D

BTW, I love the avitar, TK! :lmao:

Well Chucky checked out fine. His hair has all come back in as fast as he shed it out. It must be the weather because when we're outside and I pet him he literally explodes his hair all over!

Glad you enjoy the avatar!
