In another thread somewhere here - I don't recall now which one - TK made a comment about Cesar Milan that made me curious.  I watch The Dog Whisperer fairly frequently and have used a lot of his methods in behavior training long before he had his own show.

Naturally, his failures aren't going to make for good television, according to those who choose what to air.  Personally, I would find some failures to give him more credibility because that would show that he is not infallible.

One thing I would wish is that he could come to Detroit and rehabilitate the pit bulls that are seized here.  In Detroit, the MHS doesn't rehabilitate them; they euthanize them.  Pits are a big problem here in the ghetto because the crack dealers and gang-bangers think that having a tough-looking dog makes them tougher.  Sort of like those who have to buy a big huge truck thinking it increases the size of their weenie.  Doesn't make sense to me....but there you have it.

What I'm curious about is what TK (or anyone else) knows about Cesar's failures.  His techniques do work as I have used them myself on dozens of occasions.  But I'd like to hear about what else there is to know about this guy and his seemingly miraculous handling of dogs.

On the gsd website I go to, the Cesar Milan question comes up every so

often, and you have your views pro and con. I personally have never seen

a "failure" show, so I don't know about that. I've used a lot of the same

things he does over the years, and I think they are good, but maybe not

for the general public, at least without professional help. Some things people

call him for help for seem basic to me (dogs barking when someone's at the

door, for example) but that's just me.

Here's a link, you might find some of these views interesting:

SP, I think that you and I speak dog better than most and the things that seem simple to us are a real difficulty for others.  You really do have to "speak dog" in order for a command or a correction or training session to sink in.  Too many people think of their dogs as human and that's why they don't understand that a dog doesn't relate to that long conversation they had with him.

Some interesting views on that link, thanks  Everyone seems to be in agreement that nothing except successes are aired on his show.  No one is perfect, so there have to be instances where he has been unable to "fix" a dog.

I used to be a fan but not so much so anymore. His methods are "the usual" for anyone who, like us, Cris talk 'dog'.

Pits are put down right away here too, no matter what neighborhood the shelter is in. The problem with your suggestion of rehabilitation in your area is that it makes it all to easy for the same people who bring up and brin in these dogs to simply send someone else in to adopt them and make the o'l switcheroo.

I know he cannot possibly have a 100% success rate. I also know he's been sued for killing a dog on that stupid treadmill he uses. I personally think that treadmill is CRUEL to use. Any animal not suited for long distance hard work using a treadmill is just plain wrong.

http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2006-05-05-dog-whisperer_x.htm

and here is the settlement article:

http://www.eonline.com/news/article/index.jsp?uuid=9e431647-1e14-4b65-a1d4-4d696330dd9f

That is his method. Tire them out and work with a tired dog. I AM impressed that he can get a pack of pits to get along in that sized of a group! I can hardly keep my two from tearing each other apart. (which incidentally I figured the trigger which makes them fight! - the boyfriend!)

But his show is the same thing show after show after show. And like comments in the link, he makes it look so easy. His methods will NOT work with people using them improperly which is more likely the case. I stopped watching a year ago after I noticed every show is the same.

Again, you cannot train a dog in a short period of time and get the results he does.

Another lawsuit has been brought up against him for copyright infringement. Click the link, scroll until you see the legal bits:
