I've considered a raw meat diet after the problems one of my pets has with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). I know there is a debate among veterinarians and pet owners about the benefits versus dangers of raw meat.

I'm not ready to go the raw meat route yet, but I am feeding very rare beef, rare lamb and not over-cooked turkey and chicken as much as possible.

I will never again give my pets canned food that says it contians "meat byproducts" and I'm sticking with the more natural or organic producers of commercial pet food.

I really think a major contribution to my pet's IBD was too much commercial food. I also suspect a connection between the loss not too long ago of a pet to cancer and commercial canned food.

Has anyone read Why Is Cancer Killing Our Pets?: How You Can Protect and Treat Your Animal Companion by Deborah Shaw? I recommend it.

Even my vet has recommended staying away from most commercial pet food and feeding a variety of home prepared meats.

I know that my sister feeds her old diabetic dog raw hamburger balls for treats, and also baby carrots for treats.   She is on a specially prescribed dog food diet for her main meals though.

I've always worried about the possibility of E-coli with raw meats though myself.

My cats eat only dry food produced by Hill's, supplemented by raw meat (beef and turkey usually) and also canned tuna in its own sauce (w/salt added in the canning process).  I have no way of knowing if any of this food is safe, but I'm doing the best I know of.

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -Matthew 22:37-39

Well the canned foods you buy in the store are actually better for your dog than the kibble. The 'by products' are NOT bad. Those are simply organ meat.
Liver, kidneys, arteries, veins, hearts and lungs etc.

Dogs eat this stuff naturally if they were to fend for themselves. There is huge debate on this stuff and it seems to go around in circles from one extreme to the other.

As for any of the radical books out there, I would strongly suggest you research the author as well as the source of information they use in such books. Anyone affiliated with ALF or PeTA would raise my suspicions greatly.

Dogs are meat eaters. Unless your dog is really not digesting dog food well and is under supervision of his vet, I would stay away from home made dog foods.
Why?
becuase these foods lack the additional vitamins and nutrients that a dog killing it's own prey or the commercially made food contain. This could lead to more problems than cures.

99% of food allergies in dogs is due to the kibble type food. This is because of the fillers.

What are the fillers?
Fillers are the cereal ingredients used in the dry foods. This will also cause gassiness in your dog.
(anyone with a house full of people and a gassy beast knows this dilemma!)

You need to do some research on your dog's kibble ingredient list.
You want meat, meat by prducts and bone meals as your first ingredients. The rest is basically crap if it's cereal. These are used becuase they 'harden' in the baking process, are cheap and fill the dog up.
Dogs are not omnivores by nature. They are carnivores.

The preservatives in some of the stuff they eat is also a problem.
Hydrogenated oils, partially hydrogenated oils, BHA, BHT ad ethoxyquin. Ethoxyquin is the worst of the worst, then the hydrogenated stuff ( i won't even buy food that has that in the ingredients for me!) then BHA & BHT. The BHA & T is basically needed to some degree. It keeps the oils used in the food from going rancid.

You ever buy a bag of kibble, open it up and it smell worse than it should? Rancid oil. Old food. REALLY old food!

Dog's are pretty tough creatures gatronomically. They are one of the few animals that can actually eat rotting meat without a problem.
Cats on the other hand will NOT touch rotting meat. If you have dogs and cats in your home you can test that one out for yourself!

But the main concern all in all is if you are going to feed home made dog food, make sure  you get your dog to the vet, have your vet supervise the diet and give you proper supplements that he is not getting in the raw diet.

We've considered getting a departmental wolverine and feeding it the occasional PITA user.

I have 3 dogs. O'Malley being the eldest. I have fed him raw deer burger since he was a mere puppy. He is 10 now. The other two never aquired a taste for raw venison. O'Malley also likes to have it spiced up a wee bit too. KP
