Our dog is very peculiar in several regards.  He is a bit nervous, cautious, but very playful and puppy-like at the same time.  He is very smart, but somewhat neurotic.  Anyway, while he will do tug of war, catch frisbees, bite up dog toys (or things we give him and let him know is his), he never digs up holes in the yard, never eats furniture, or anything like that.  One odd thing is that he doesn't eat or chew up the rawhide stuff.  I've never had a dog that didn't go to town on those things.  Once in a blue moon I will catch an edge of it bit up a little, but it's practically nothing.  He treats bones more like toys.

He is a medium sized dog, mostly hound, some lab mixed in.  He will not chew up rawhide!  Anyone else have a weird dog like that?

Hi, no ... he was always like that ... he chews on things we give him and stuff ... but just not rawhide.  He walks around with them like they are his cigars.  Doesn't chew them up.  He's also not crazy about dog biscuits.

Have you ever tried giving him a pig's hoof?  They sell them in places like PetSmart.  My dog Charlie loves to chew on them. They smell like ham, so they probably taste like it too.  Charlie's vet says they're better than rawhide for dogs, and more digestible.

Susan, I'm glad you said that .. he is even weird with the pig ears I give him.  He hoards them and won't eat them, like his bones.  He takes them outside sometimes to play with them but then they rot and stuff and I throw them out!

Have you tried going to your local butcher and getting him a real bone?

Sounds like the bird dog in him is dominant. Some bird dogs won't chew up things.

The no digging in the yard and other behaviorial 'issues' are not weirdness, they are signs of your dog respecting you. He knows what is his and what isn't.

As far as the bones and chewing go, dogs with what we call 'soft mouths' - mostly bird hunting type dogs - are not big on chewing.

You said he does like the softer things you give him. Well, that is because they are soft. Bird dogs are 'built' and when trained to hunt to not destroy the prey they bring back to the hunter. Hence the retriever bit in the name.

Sometimes some lines of hunting dogs will show this non chewing trait more than others. You should be glad. When Daisy was young she ate my pool, my air conditioner, my sewing macine, and the BBQ grill. And she still had her puppy teeth then! Never mind what they do to car tires and people!

Hi Twitchin!  Yeah, I am very glad he is not into digging up things, burying bones, or chewing up stuff!  Your bird-dog explanation makes sense - it ties in with some hunter stuff I see in him.  He is also a nervouse/cautious type dog and so your comment about respecting me is on too.

We yelled at him early on about that stuff and he listened fast so I am not surprised if he just didn't have a very strong innate desire to chew up hard things and stuff.

Thanks!

I'm dying Frank. I've a feeling I'm going to need another fusion and I dread the answer. Just once I'd like to be wrong on those things.

One day my dog just gave up rawhide bones.  She used to devour them,  Now I don't even give them to her because all she does with them is bury them in the closet.:dunno:
