I know some folks here who know me have "met" Trixie.  But let me take this opportunity to introduce her to people who do not know her.

She is two years old, spoiled and alot of fun to have around.  She is sure fast...and runs like the wind.

I've never actually known anyone who had a chinchilla for a pet!  Are they friendly?  Do they bite?  What do they eat?  Do they have to be caged all the time?  Do they try to escape?

A chin takes some time to trust thier new surroundings and caregiver.  So, it takes some patience and sitting outside the cage and talking, and letting them know you are not a threat.

Trixie will nip a bit, and groom...but thier teeth, while sharp, are not big, and do no real harm.

They live mainly on a diet of hay and pellets.  I will give Trixie an occasion treat..a bit of dried apple, carrot, a grape or a few cheerios.  Sometimes a mini shredded wheat.  I do not give her treats often.

I do keep her in her cage most of the time...as she can be quite the escape artist.  She looks big, but that is mainly fluff..she is rather lean under all that fur.  She is actually able to crawl under neath the door frames.  If you look back at that picture of her jumping against the door, you will see a door guard at the bottom.

She cannot escape from her cage though.  Her play room is chinchilla proofed.  I will often take her out almost every evening for about an hour.  I have a wheel in her cage for exercise.

Thought I would tell a few Trixie the chinchilla stories.  There are plenty to tell.  Her new favorite treat, it seems, is dried banana chips.  She craves them.  She will sit and beg for a chip...as she is doing right this minute, even though she just had one an hour ago.

When I have herin her playroom, I will bring two or three bits of banana in with me, and put them on the arm of the chair I sit on.  So, I put her down, she runs a bit, takes a dust bath, and then she is right at the chair, looking for her "reward" for being a good girl. 

I have to be careful if I bring in a book to read and Trixie will see it as a chew toy.  Therefore, no library books around her.  Of course she has to sit right on the open book, while I am trying to read.  I think she gets upset if I am not paying her attention.

Well, end of today's chapter.
