If you live in one the areas that is experiencing the freezing weather and ice, please bring your animals inside. With all the freezing rain and sleet, it is not safe for them and if they get ice in their fur or on their bedding, hypothermia can set in fairly quickly. REPEAT.......bring your animals inside!

My cat is not speaking to me at the moment because I won't let him take his outdoor stroll. I'd rather have a pissed off cat than a dead one. PLEASE, pay attention to the weather, both extreme cold AND extreme heat can kill, and quickly.

Good point, UsedtoRide. Remember folks, if it's dangerous cold (or hot) outside for you, it's dangerous outside for our pets as well.

My dog barks as soon as he wants to come in! He happens to love it outside during the day, regardless of the weather (although this year he has decided to hate rain for some reason). He never wants to stay out at night! He is a hound and lab mix.

Attack the idea, not the person. Don't make things hostile if you can. Handle that challenge. A the same time, if you ask for advice, you take the risk of getting criticized. Handle it. Frank wrote the above in the thread about Prince Colins' dogs. I will comment on this. And I will ask that Gagoon take note of what I say too. I read his reply and actually, as one of the 'attackers' on that topic, I tend to agree with his 'lecture' to a degree. But regardless that the man has asked for help, what he did in reality is ask for this argument. I gave sound advice based on the pictures (that are now gone, purposefully I would think to make us look like bullies) and what did he do? He came back saying basically that he did what he did, the houses are insulated and too bad. He did this repeatedly. This guy kept coming back saying that no matter what advice we do or did give, FRIENDLY as that whole topic started out - he said no, he'll do it his way. Now how do you expect people to help someone that won't accept it, then instigate us into thinking the worst of him? Regardless if the garage is colder than outside, it is DRY and sheltered from the wind. Put a doghouse with PROPER packed straw in there off the floor on a pallette and the two dogs will cuddle up in there nicely. But he would rather tell us how independent his super smart dogs are and how they will make the decision for him. Sorry, but temporarily bringing the dogs inside for a day or two will not kill his wife. She'll get over it. Gagoon, you say the guy is learning. You don't learn at the expense of another life. You just don't. Especially since he asked for advice knowing full well he isn't doing this the right way. Why else if he were so confident in his decision would he have asked? Again, advice was asked for and given and all advice was rejected. When I saw the first three posts in the thread, I was under the impression that these were larger dogs. Once I heard they were Poms, it hit home. I had to rescue a Pom in this very same situation up here in the NORTH from one of my FRIENDS. I knew that day was going to come when I saw her get the dog from her husband. He wouldn't let the animals in the house either. I cannot tell you the abuse I have seen in that house. Needless to say I am not friends with this family any more. I couldn't save the Pom's life. She too packed the doghouse with the same crap as Prince Colin does. If someone cannot take proper care of their pet the most humane thing to do is give it a better home. Period. There is a huge difference between letting your dog outside for awhile supervised (or semi-supervised in a safe yard) and then letting him back in than there is to permanently keeping dogs outside in all kinds of weather. My two love to be outside in the cold too, but they ask to come in after awhile. These are big hearty dogs. Inclement weather means you have to go out of your way sometimes to take extra special care of your pet. Most times it's a TEMPORARY situation and life goes back to normal.

My dogs do the same thing........well one barks and the other scratches at the door. I would like to add here, that if you have a large breed of dog that is suited for the outdoors, and you insist on leaving them outside, please keep these things in mind. The dog house should be built up off the cold ground, or set upon a wooden platform (wooden pallets work great for this) and the house should be filled with straw. Do not use blankets, carpeting, clothing, etc. as that will get wet and make the situation worse. You should go out several times a day to provide fresh water when it is freezing as it is very important for them to remain hydrated. If you've done all these things, great! But you should still have a place to bring them indoors should the weather get dangerously cold. If the only place you have to bring them is a garage, place a small space heater next to their bed. I like the oil filled heaters for that as they are the safest. Please, lets all keep out pets safe this winter!

Tk thank you for your post, and we do agree more then tend to disagree on what I believe and feel each of us wrote. I too believe, if you cannot give a "Safe" enviroment to any animal, you have the obligation to find it a "safe" home. You accepted, purchased, adopted the pet. You therefore took on the responsibilty for said animal till either you find it another home, or take it to a shelter. It is not a crime if you cannot take care of an animal. Especially if one of the owners of the home does not agree in the animals being there. I'm sorry in ways what I wrote came off as a lecture. It was wrong. And I will apologize that I came off that strongly. I've lived with a partner before that did not like animals. I now have someone that enjoys them as much as I. Including in giving the care and love it needs. He did ask, he did refuse advice. His bad. he had many choices. He made it. I am a pet lover and believe folks are responsible as I stated earlier for their care. Hopefully, he did learn from this and in the winter will go and spend the small cost of a bale of straw just to have around. Maybe even get a pallet to place in the garage (and heck, maybe install a doggy door, so they can go in and out at their will? That would be nice. I think if I was to worry it would be more about the poms in the summer out in the heat! It just seemed to me that once he showed he was not inclined to get the advice he wanted, it should have maybe just been let go. I can't do anything being in GA for the poms. The man has choose to do what he wanted to do. I feel for the poms,, it was one of those times in my opinion, just to move on. Shame.. but true. As I had said before to UTR. I do respond differently then I would in person. Had I lived in the area,, chances are I would have done things different. I probably would have offered to bring the poms to my home for a couple of nights. But that is me. Most of us love our pets, As we get older and our kids move out, they become the replacement for our children. I know mine has. My JRT gives me hours of loving and comfort. Sleeps beside me on the couch,, has her own room in the house (converted washroom) with her crate (lined with a clean blanket so she don't lay right on the metal) her food, water, and a puppy pad incase she has an accident because of illness, or just bad timing of the day. The room has both a/c and heat. At night she sleeps in our room. Yes she is spoiled, and yes, we love her, and accepted the responsibility of her when we adopted her. Took her (because of being stubborn) nearly a year to understand going outside for potty. She had accidents. Both of us cleaned them up. We have a new pup coming in Mid april, early may. The new pup will receive the same love and treatment. And both will be with us till their medical condition will not be in their best benefit for full life. Thanks for the conversation,,, and thoughts... Gagoon

Great points Cherwood.. I like to oil heaters also. if you cant/wont take care of the animals,, please,, dont get them at all.. That is unfair to them. I've never had any outside animals.. (owned dogs and cats.) all do and have went outside, but with proper training and guidance outside of a small accident due to illness now and again,, humans can get along and live just fine with animals in the house. they don't make that huge of a mess.. Just a little more spring cleaning then once a year.. <G> Gagoon

I've lived with a partner before that did not like animals. No offense, but I think that's a sign of something wrong with their emotional health. I can't imagine not liking some kind of animal. I probably shouldn't have posted that.

I too only keep indoor pets. Even if you provide properly for an outside dog, there is no doubt that they usually don't get the love and attention that they so deserve. I've had my fair share of arguments with neighbors that keep their animals outside 24 to 7........usually they ar lucky if the humans remember to throw out some food for them. Oh and the one that keep them chained.........Oh, you don't wanna get me started there! I just don't see the point in having a pet if it's gonna be outside all the time being ignored for the most part, instead of at it's loving owners side. I couldn't get any enjoyment out of that.
