Thank you Tk for the article.. Tazz is smart,,, but she is stubborn (and yes even talks back a little bit) at first it was cute,,, LOL,, then a bit of a pain. We have found a common ground now. She speaks, I love her.. :P

She has been perfect in being inside the house for the past 6 months. She has used her puppy pad when need be. (Sometimes being on the road, I have extremely long days..) not her fault, but I feel it is safer for her inside and make a little mess on her pad, then be outside and in danger of nobody being home to help her.
Thanks again,, I'll take a look at it later on..

I just don't see the point in having a pet if it's gonna be outside all the time being ignored for the most part, instead of at it's loving owners side.  I couldn't get any enjoyment out of that.

Chained Grrrrrrrrrrrr,,, Now that will get me going. Build a dang fence,, install and train them on a electronic fence...  but never a chain... I could see we could agree bigtime on that one..

This is a particularly important warning.

We're not forecast to get above freezing in north central Texas until tomorrow afternoon.

I've noticed that a large (almost all) percentage of Native Americans on the reservation by my home always leave their dogs outside all winter and summer.  A friend of mine did that too (also native american) and I asked him once why he didn't bring the poor thing inside when it was bad outside (or ever play with the dog or even take it for a walk).  He told me, "That's the Indian way.  Dogs are for outside."

Interestingly, packs of wild dogs in Shiprock regularly attack the elderly and the young.

Quite the different attitude from an Anglo-Saxon point of view isn't it?  Of course I don't agree with it, but I have been told many times on the net that just because I have one set of values, doesn't mean I get to impose them on everyone.

But I bet most of those dogs you describe are not little pure bred companion dogs. Are they? Wanna bet if they are big enough to attack people in packs the are not little bitty Pomeranians?

I also bet that you weren't asked for help with cold weather for them, only to get insulted when given the advice saying your expertise will be ignored. And you then didn't go sulk and whine how your feelings were hurt and expected those who's feelings you hurt in return just ignore the fact you hurt their feelings and told them basically, 'your advice sucks, i'll do as I please.'

So, knowing that I also can bet those dogs know where to go for shelter out of really bad weather. There is nothing wrong with keeping dogs outdoors. There is something wrong with asking for help knowing damn well your dogs are not comfortable and refusing even a temporary situation of bringing them indoors for a day or two.

I agree wholeheartedly with you on what you say Saint, but this was posted becase someone asked for help and didn't like the advice given, thus instigating an ugly situation when he starting slinging insults and acting impudent.

Packs of wild dogs regularly attack small children and the elderly in Shiprock, hunh?

::chuckle::

Guess they don't like being left outside all the time.

Saint, I bet the breeds of dogs they keep are not toy breeds either, are they?

Toy breeds were not meant to be outside dogs, especially not in inclement weather.  They are bred to be companion animals.   Large hardy breeds will generally no fine out in the elements, but even with these, precautions need to taken in really cold weather.

I, too, am opposed (strongly) to chaining.  I was VERY glad to see that one of our counties here adopted this a little while back:

"Orlando, Fla. -- A new law in Orange County, Fla., makes it illegal to chain dogs in yards between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., according to a Local 6 News report. For more information, call the animal services of Orlando, Florida."

Hallelujah!  I, however, would take it one step further and would have said no chaining at ANY hour.  I mean, really, I don't understand their intent if they are only saying that you can't chain them between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. - why are the other hours acceptable?

hey Beagle,, I agree why only certain hours? I'd rather not see any chains ever at all. Give them a safe and secure place to run. A place to get out of the heat in the summer, and cold in the winter. A friend of mine has doggy doors setup on his garage, (and interior door) for his dogs to get out. He feels it keeps the house a bit more secure? But hey, atleast the dogs can get out. There yard is completely fenced so no fear on that. The dogs wont even go out of the fence when the gate is opened.. They have a vent from the furnace/ac to the garage. It is not as cool or warm as the rest of the house, but it keeps it comfy..

Have a great day.

back home in Mass. i had german shepards, a weimeraner, and 2 malamutes. i loved the dogs and had acres of woods and land. when i moved to florida i made a decision not to have a dog, it's too hot, they have to be restrained in most communities, and there are too many poisonous snakes. i get so mad when i see cold-weather breeds like samoyeds down here in 100 degree heat. an opposite dilemma than the extreme cold scenario, but still a worry.

In the summer time our dogs go out and do their thing and then come running back inside. We're careful not to walk them until at least 10pm (sidewalks have cooled down)
