I am so happy to see they finally had the sense to put this poor animal down. Barbaro is our Kentucky Derby winner last year and in the Preakness he shattered his left pastern to bits. I mean shattered. There's a kabillion screws in his foot trying to save his leg and thus his life, but in my opinion, they did the wrong thing by this beautiful animal. This horse has suffered every single day mentally and physically and I dont' think they fully understood what they did to him for a year. Barbaro has been stall bound since May, no interaction from other horses, no days without pain, no days without medication, several times he foundered, all those days in a sling! It tears me apart to see people make decisions like this for their own selfish feelings and not think of what the poor animal will go through in this time. All that suffering only to end up with a needle in his neck anyway. I cannot believe the vet let this go on this long! RIP Barbaro. You deserve some peace and no more pain.

Yeah, thanks. I hope these people can sleep at night because what they did is just awful.

having raised and bred horses myself, I am familiar with such an injury as he had. The risks outweighed the benefit too much to even consider such a risk. This poor horse never had a chance. Horses bones just don't heal like ours and when you get a shattered bone vs a clean break your chances of recovery are close to none.

I can tell you I got a whole ration of garbage from one of my pros on my pet site regarding this. Got ourselves a nice debate. I think I'm ahead. She's a kid in some school in Wisconsin ( I forget the name but well renowned vet college) and had a horse come in with a similar situation. Sometimes veterinarians too get wrapped up in the work and forget that the horse and his true feelings (meaning how a HORSE would ration this out) should be considered. I don't blame the owners for giving it the first go, but once it kept going toward one problem compounded by another, sorry, put the animal down.

This sort of reminded me of the Terri Schiavo case... the family held on way, WAY longer than they should have in a selfish attempt to keep her close.

When Kath was so ill, I wanted to hold on Twilla. I did not want to let her go. Until it happens to you well like I said, that is a tough call. KP

I do understand KP, but TS was on life support for 15 years. It was time for her to move on and her family wouldn't allow it. It was a hard thing to accept, but that's also a long time to get used to the idea.

I still say that is a tough call. Look at the people who have been documented that have woke up from coma's after 20 years.

I know I'm late to this but I wanted to add a couple things that I've thought about this subject. I really feel that if Barbaro had been a mare or a gelding, he would have been put down right away at the track. Even if the leg had healed and the laminitis hadn't developed, he was forever changed and probably forever been relegated to a lawn ornament. This is a really sad video and be forewarned, it might bother you guys to see this once proud free-moving horse like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNHQlGFpnkw I've heard his owners speak, and I think they DID in fact love him, but maybe too much.

This has caused a somewhat heated debate on my site with me and one of my pros. She took this a bit too personally and I think we sorted out our thoughts on this. She is a veterinary student in Wisconsin and works in a well renowned veterinary hospital there. I can see her point but sometimes vets too lose sight of the big picture. Vets too have gotten into the habit of patronizing the over caring and clouded thought animal owner mostly to avoid a lawsuit by an hysterical pet owner saying the vet didn't do all they could. Double edged knife really. I saw that video, a shorter version many times on the news when they reported on this. I saw that poor animal walking like that and always wondered how he will ever enjoy a normal horse life? He has a spine that is looking a bit deformed or it's on it's way to deformed because his body is now moving in new ways to compensate his new way of going. He's lost way too much weight and has very little muscle tone. hand walking for hours a day cannot keep fit muscle. He would indeed be relagated to a lawn ornament. There is no way he could live in a herd, no way he coud be in a pasture where he can get up any running speed. The poor thing can't even trot. Walking is difficult as shown in the video. I wish I could hear what they are saying. But the sadder part is this video is when he's doing WELL. His foot is all twisted and it simply looks uncomfortable for him. He couldn't even be used as stud. the owners knew that. And yeah, like you say, they probably loved him too much, causing their emotions to cloud the big picture. There is no way he could stud. Thoroughbreds must cover live and not use artificial insemination. This would cause his leg to shatter yet again. How do you explain to any animal that what you are going to put them through for who knows how long is actually going to make them better? You can't.
