The Richland Center Police Dept. reports that a Richland Center man was arrested Wed. morning after allegedly stabbing a neighbor's dog to death. According to Chief of Police John Annear, at approx. 9:20 AM officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of North Church St. after a 911 caller reported that a neighbor had just stabbed her dog.
Upon arrival officers located a deceased five-year-old yellow Lab and a witness to the incident who described to the officers what had taken place. A short time later, officers arrested Thomas G. Thelen, 59 of Richland Center in connection with the dog's death. Thelen was taken into custody and booked with mistreating an animal causing death, a class E felony.
On Wed. afternoon officers executed a search warrant at the Thelen home in
connection with their investigation into the dog's death. Thomas Thelen appeared in Richland Center Circuit Court and was released on a $1,000 cash bail with the conditions that he not have contact with the victims or witnesses in the incident and that he not possess any firearms. The police department was assisted by the Richland County District Attorney's office.

How about not alowing any future pet ownership??  How about bumping killing a dog to something bigger than a "class E" felony?  What the hell could a LAB, of all things, done to this guy to piss him off to the point he kills it with a knife???   :bang9::bang9::bang9::bang9::bang9:

There's a case here in Utah that's caused a lot of people to attempt to change the way animal abusers are treated by the law.  A man was pissed off at his wife, so he stuck her little dog in a 200 degree oven for 5 minutes.  The dog lived, but he was severely injured, obviously and the dickwad that did it only got a small fine.

Hopefully this sort of thing will soon result in felony charges and up to five years in the slammer.  Anyone that would treat an animal like that wouldn't hesitate to hurt a person.

the only way the laws can be changed in regard to animal cruelty is by writing your state legislators.

The ASPCA website is a wonderful resource in this regard because they have all kinds of stuff listed by state.

They also have an area for you to write your local representative by using their already made form letter and top that off they leave a space in the letter where you can interject your own words and thoughts.

Most animal cruelty laws are as lame as they are because there is not enough 'stink' made over the issues in each state.

I have lost count of the number of letters I've written.  But I'll write more!  It wouldn't be the first time someone has done what I wanted just to shut me up.

And that is a pathetic, and sad commentary about people when there isn't enough "stink" raised about this issue.  To me, that says, "Hey, it's alright to beat up on animals."  Assholes.
