I would like to know why they fight at 7:30 in the morning and sometimes earlier. It sounds like the freakin jungle up there One cat is cool the other one is slightly crazy I'm gonna kick both their asses out in the snow, geez at least let me drink my first cup of coffee....Rant over.

Anyone know why they fight, it sounds so serious but I think they really do it out of boredom.

Do they have at least some separate things? You should have 2 litter boxes,

hopefully not in close proximity to each other, food bowls and "beds" for each

one. (A bed can be anything from just a folded up piece of soft old blanket

to a primo store-bought thing).

How long have they been together? Sometimes it takes kitties a while to

work out territory. Are they spayed and/or neutered? Is this "real" fighting?

Sometimes being an interactive parent and PLAYING with them with toys

(Not then but the afternoon/night before) might help!

Are they both boys? Both girls? One of each?

I found it's usually the boy/boy combo that this happens more with. Girl/girl will play and when annoyed will usually hiss and growl and end it right there. For some reason I never had a problem with girl/boy combos.

I have the same problem with my cats sometimes but I have taught my pit bull Daisy to break up any fighting now. That is the best thing I ever did! She now knows the sound and gesturing of the start of a fight and will bust it up before it even begins now!

Anyway, what happens is that they probably start off with some play, chasing and friendly batting around. Most cats will play hardest just before bedtime and then again around 4 - 5 AM.

This chasing and batting usually turns to wrestling and then the neck biting and rougher play and then more rough play.

One seems to get insulted that the other had the nerve to 'one up' him and then it starts.

The scrap usually lasts only a minute or less and there is fur all over and someone shows a visible wound being either a scratch across the snout or a bite / puncture wound somewhere, usually a leg.

Then an hour later they are snuggled up together like nothing happened.

The worst is what you hear! It's the horrid screaming that they make that irritates you more than the fighting I'll bet.

House cats actually are the closest cousin to the tiger. Tigers are loners and lions are the only wild cat that live in prides. The males will live among the pride until it's time to move on and this is determined by the elder male. He knows that the young males have to go and start their own prides lest his get will be no more.

Fighting will begin and the loser leaves the pride to live on his own to find a pride to fight for a place into and take over or he roams alone until he finds a lone female and starts his own pride.

This is similar behavior you are witnessing. But the thing is, although this is lion pride behavior, our house cats are truly more similar to the tiger genetically and socially.

They can and will do just fine alone as well as in a group. They only get along in the 'group' in our homes because we force the issue. We think they need another cat for company because we cannot give them the time and attention they need while we are away from the house.

This is the biggest falsehood of cat ownership. Lone cats are just fine and some prefer it that way.

Sweet Pea's suggestion of double everything is good but not a necessity. I have 5 cats and one litterbox. My cats don't' fuss over toys and food dishes. I've a feeling my cats are just odd.

I do have a pair of sisters from the same litter, Thing 1 & Thing 2. They absolutely hate each other. They USED to love each other, snuggling and cuddling and doing everything together, but one day, boom, just like that they hate each other!

But the sisters leave each other alone. They'll hiss and growl, yet in the wee hours of the morning, they are playing chase me all over with the rest of them.  But it's the boys who are the ones who get into the scraps and it's ALWAYS Smitty  (age 19 - 8 pounds) and Chucky (age 12? - 16 pounds) and Smitty usually wins.

Classic seniority behavior that I described above.

Got a dog? Teach the dog to break them up before they start hollering and freaking you out like I did.

But there really isn't much you can do other than keep them separate. You can keep a water bottle handy and set it to stream. When you hear them start, hose them down! Be careful to not get water in the eyes or ears, but usually one good shot in the tushy does the trick.

Soon they will save their scraps to the times you are not in earshot.
