My dog Charlie is being anesthasized to have his teeth cleaned and have a growth removed.  There's a slight risk (more than the usual) because he has a slight heart murmur.

Am waiting to hear from the vet how he's doing.  Will update you as soon a I know anything.

Thanks, Britt!   They should be calling any minute now.  He's been in since 7:30 this morning.  If they don't call soon, I'll call them.

Hey, Luvdawgs, it sucks when your furkids go under the knife, doesn't it?  These 2 procedures are amazingly simple.  I've done countless dental cleanings and assisted in many growth removals.  Do you know if your vet uses a catheter IV induced anesthetic, or just the gas?  For these types of surgeries I would think the gas, which is much safer.  I loved doing dentals.  They were very satisfying turning the crusty, tartered teeth to gleaming pearly whites!

I've always seen my vet using the catheter IV induced anesthetic.

I was tired of waiting to hear from the vet so I just called.  Charlie is doing fine and he'll be ready to pick up between 5:30 and 6:30 EDT.  They had to put a cone on his head because he wouldn't stop licking the sutures.  Poor little dog!  He has to keep it on for 10 days.  He'll go nuts!!  I'll take him for a lot of walks so it tires him out and he'll sleep instead of thinking about licking and biting himself.  This should work unless he figures out a way to get the cone off from his head. ::chuckle::

Thanks for your concern, Britt and UTR ::nsmile::

Generally, the animals are knocked out with a needle anesthetic, in order to intubate them.  Then the gas takes over.  Since all is fine with Charlie, I won't go all "medical-vet-tech" on you.  Animal medicine has made amazing strides and the people that work this field do everything in their power to keep the furkids safe.  I'm glad all is well, and you may get a salve to put around Charlie's sutures to inhibit his chewing on the sutures.

I think the only thing that will inhibit Charlie from chewing on the sutures is the head cone.  He doesn't care how bad things taste.  Bitter Apple tastes like candy to him!

:lmao:  Another familiar situation!  Lots of dogs seem immune to the Bitter Apple.  There is another topical thing that we used to use, (I can't recall the name of it now) in a toothpaste-like tube, very thick, very stinky, and we would cover bandages with it to prevent the chewing.  But, some dogs still chewed through it anyway.  The E-collar may be the only thing to keep him away from it.

OH MY GOD......................THE LAMP SHADE!  When my little dog's had surgery, they both came home with the "lamp shades" around there necks.  I laughed so hard when I saw Snuggles taking a drink.  It looked like a dog, sticking out of a lampshade that was sitting over a bowl.................:lmao:  Of course, the look I got back, made me realize "You don't laugh at your firkids when they don't think it's funny"  Oh DAH  I didn't do that again!

Just brought Charlie home.  Looks like the cone extends farther out than his little flat face, so I may have to bring the water and food bowls up to his mouth in order to enable him to eat and drink.

UTR, I asked at the vets what they used for Charlie.  They said they gave him shots of Valium and Ketamine, then used Isoflorene.

Carl (my husband) is taking Charlie for a short walk and then I'm supposed to feed him a light meal for this evening.  The cone is driving Charlie insane already!  Hopefully he'll get used to it for the 10 days he has to keep it on.

Valium to relax him and the ketamine and isoflorene are standard.  The isoflo is the gas.  For the e-collar you may need to trim the edges a bit.  It can be just short enough for him to not be able to reach the sutures.  I've seen many dogs with those collars dump food and water bowls because they were so huge!  Poor puppers.
