I held the food bowl at a slant, in front of his face,  for Charlie and it made it a lot easier for him to eat. :)

My dog Charlie is being anesthasized to have his teeth cleaned and have a growth removed.  There's a slight risk (more than the usual) because he has a slight heart murmur.

Am waiting to hear from the vet how he's doing.  Will update you as soon a I know anything.

Just out of curiosity, what does that cost over your - or anyone's - way, to have the animal anesthasized and their teeth cleaned?

Deducting the cost of the growth removal and E-collar, the total was $268.00.  We live in a suburban area, so the cost might be lower in rural areas.

oh gosh no!

Unfortunately where I live in Palm Springs, CA every business chooses to treat everyone as though they were wealthy. To have my cats teeth cleaned under anaesthesia would be $630, not counting any medication to take home. (He's has an e-collar for months now)

I'll have to find another vet, which stinks because I really like this place, but with as many cats I have I can't pay that every year for each of them and this place insists on putting them under.

:::sigh:::

I hate living in a semi-rural area as many options are few thereby limiting price controls resulting from competition.

Sorry to hear that, Outre. And I thought the prices were ridiculous where I live!  I hope you'll be able to find another place that's more reasonable.

Good grief, that's highway robbery!!!  There are things that can easily raise the rate of a dental, but this is insane.  For a basic cleaning with no extractions, we charged around $180.  During the exam we could tell which teeth might need to be pulled and would inform the onwer about the possible added cost.  Bloodwork for older animals can cause the price to rise also.  Is your cat older, or does it have other medical issues?

Just for the record, the $268.00 didn't include any extraction, and didn't include the blood work, which was done last week.  The blood work they did was called "senior comprehensive" and cost an additional $126.00, but they were testing for other things with that too.

He's ten years old, he allegedly has Eosinophilic granuloma complex - otherwise in good health with some calculus buildup on the back teeth, but as far as they could tell none decaying. The vet said there was no problem cleaning his teeth since he already had his senior blood workup a month ago all should be go. He schedules the appointment and tells me one of the staff would bring an estimate. Now, back in June when I first started taking him there for the skin condition I know they quoted me around $200 + / - $50 and they knew all of the above already. Problem is - it's snow bird season. All the wealthy from around the world are here in their winter homes.

Here's the rundown on the estimate (I nearly choked when I saw it)

  35.00    Pre Operative Examination
100.00   ( IH ) Anesthetic Profile, Pre-
  15.00    ECG Pre-op
  30.00    Surgical Bath
  51.00    Pre Operative Radiograph Screen
  30.00    Pre Operative Pain Package
    5.00    Patient Surgical Prep
    5.00    Catheterization     (Procedural only)
5.00    Fluid Therapy IV    (Procedural only)
    3.50    IV Set                    (Procedural only)
  10.50    Propofol Induction IV
  30.00    Intubation
  42.00    Surgery Nursing Care
    5.00    Anesthetic Monitor Devices
  20.00    Gen. Gas/Inhalant Anes. (sevo)/minute 20
    5.00    Operating Room Maintenance
    2.00    Surgical Pack Prep (steam/cold)
140.00    Dental Scaling - Ultrasonic
  12.00    Polishing
    5.00    Flouride Treatment
  20.00    OraVet Barrier Sealant Application
    3.00    Postprocedural care (routine)
  20.00    Ward Fee
7.00    Hospitalized Medical Waste Disposal Fee
  25.00    Telemetry - first hour

TOTAL SURGERY
626.00

Additional Costs
============
  26.00    Clavamox tabs 125mg
26.50    One Month ultrasonic recheck w/charge
30.00    OraVet Take Home Prevention Kit

GRAND TOTAL
    $708.50

Note: I asked the doctor after seeing this estimate if it would be the same for all of my cats and he noted that it would - that they always did these under anesthetic as they hadn't had much success with the other version in cats.

That is sheer madness, outre!  I do hope you find a more reasonable place to take your cat.

Btw, Charlie has resigned himself to the cone, it seems, although he's not too happy about it.

Oh.  My.  God.

Some of the charges on this bill are the most ridiculous I have ever seen and I have seen thousands of vet bills and estimates.  Some of this is simply stealing from you.

35.00    Pre Operative Examination    Uh, before or after the exam to determine a dental??
100.00   ( IH ) Anesthetic Profile, Pre-  Bloodwork that runs about 30 bucks.
15.00    ECG Pre-op   Takes 15 seconds to accomplish.
30.00    Surgical Bath   WTF is a surgical bath and why is it needed?????
51.00    Pre Operative Radiograph Screen  Way over-priced
30.00    Pre Operative Pain Package  Pain BEFORE surgery???
5.00    Patient Surgical Prep   Also takes about 5 seconds
    5.00    Catheterization     (Procedural only)
5.00    Fluid Therapy IV    (Procedural only)
3.50    IV Set                    (Procedural only)  Hmm....3.50 for an item that costs less than a dollar.
  10.50    Propofol Induction IV
30.00    Intubation    WHAT??!?!?!??  I can tube a dog or cat in under a minute
42.00    Surgery Nursing Care  A total scam of a charge
    5.00    Anesthetic Monitor Devices
  20.00    Gen. Gas/Inhalant Anes. (sevo)/minute 20
5.00    Operating Room Maintenance   'Splain this one to me???
2.00    Surgical Pack Prep (steam/cold)  2 bucks to run the autoclave they have to run no matter what.
140.00    Dental Scaling - Ultrasonic
12.00    Polishing    Ask to have a look at the thimble-sized container of this stuff.
    5.00    Flouride Treatment
  20.00    OraVet Barrier Sealant Application
    3.00    Postprocedural care (routine)
20.00    Ward Fee   Good Lord, what do they charge for actual boarding?
7.00    Hospitalized Medical Waste Disposal Fee  What disposal from a dental?
  25.00    Telemetry - first hour

TOTAL SURGERY
626.00

Additional Costs
============
  26.00    Clavamox tabs 125mg
26.50    One Month ultrasonic recheck w/charge
30.00    OraVet Take Home Prevention Kit  I'd love to see what's in this little "kit"

GRAND TOTAL
    $708.50

I hope I haven't totally pissed you off, Outre, but there is some highly suspicious stuff on this bill.

I've taken some photos of Charlie with the cone with my digital camera, but either my D-link or the card reader isn't working.  When I get it figured out, maybe I can post one of the photos.
